LOL ok... So, I actually thought to myself... 1.3kgs??? This guy is full of sh*t!!! LOL but didn't want to seem like a wanker having a crack!!!

My old bike frame was full carbon and weighed like 7kgs... I was trying to work out how that much carbon fiber could only weigh 1.3kg :-)

Makes sense now!!!

Spiro, I would naturally make the assumption that you have put long hours of investigation into sourcing your carbon rims, I'm just wondering if these are to be a permanent fixture on the car or something that is only fitted every now and then?

I put almost 6 months into sourcing some carbon wheels for my cbr929rr race bike back in 2004 and again persued the idea in 2009 for my new Fireblade but couldn't find any that come with a decent warranty, nor the longevity of testing I thought sufficient.

My reasons for asking were in my previous line of work I was a Non-Destrictive Testing tech. Basically I did industrial radiography and ultrasonic inspections. We did a lot of work with a carbon fibre company working out of Italy building carbon hulls and boat parts, who wanted our company to investigate the failures of some of their development motorsport wheels. We found that the carbon was becoming britle and basically exploding after being driven on for periods over timeframes as little as 25,000k's and 14 months. Our advice included but wasnt limited to kevlar inclusions to a minimum 65%, plus magnesium/alumina inclusions, and having wheels returned to the manufacturer every 2500km for full inspections and shock loading.

pm me if you want as I'd be intrested in what you've discovered as this info is from almost 2 years ago, and I'd be interested in looking at buying myself some new wheels for the Blade.

Cheers.

Hey Matty,

You are correct on your research regarding longevity, however it all depends on the price you pay for the wheels, the final composite mix, as well as the experience of the organization doing the manufacturing :buttonit: I will PM further details as we get closer to making the choice.

Cheers Spiko, that would be great. Speaking of carbon, any thoughts of swapping out panels on the beast for carbon ones? :beerchug: Black cars with carbon panels look Tuff, not that you cars doesn't look tuff already, lol.
