Diy Water Spray

has anyone ever done a cheap diy water spray onto the cooler and seen results?

im thinking of maybe installing a second windscreen washer pump going from the washer bottle to a few jets facing onto the cooler. and just mounting a manual switch in the car somewhere.

im trying to think of cheap ways to help the monza out over summer.

sound like it would work,

ive heard stories of a few wrx's losing 20rwkw over a few dyno runs then being given a spray with water and retaining most of it.

any ideas

Water injection when done properly is great, the plan you have though will only end in disappointment.

We tested the effects that water/metho in a 50/50 mix had on my ute over 12 months ago and the results were a gain of 20rwkw but it didnt just happen instantly. I used a snow performance kit which has its own little computer that lets you adjust the amount of total water aswell as the ramp rate at which the water gets injected. The ramp rate is crucial to getting good results, just using a boost activated switch will cause the engine to bog down as too much water will be injected initially if you are to get anywhere near the correct amount of water being injected at max rpm. You need to find the sweet spot to get it working to your advantage and without that little computer you will be pissing in the wind. You would have more chance of guessing the lotto numbers than of getting it right with the system you were thinking of.

In short save your coin for a snow performance kit and some dyno time.

Correct me if I'm wrong here xrt, but I think he was referring to external water spray onto the surface of the intercooler and not injection, ETM.

It's a good idea, in theory, if you have high ambient temps and a not too efficient intercooler.

The only downside is you will use lots of water and you'll need to sort out spray head flow rates for maximum effect without just pouring water everywhere.

Also, a large capacity tank is normally required as a washer bottle isn't very large in capacity and won't last long.

yeah sorry I should have made myself clearer I was only talking about water spray onto the outside of the I/c just to cool it down abit, maybe ill try make something up out of the car and see if it works.

I dont think I would use it very often, maybe just on those hot long drives home where I can actually feel the car getting sluggish

I ran water spray on my WRX (tmic) 2 ways over the years.

First way was very similiar to your idea. I bought jap STi water bottle with spots for two pumps. One for the windows and one for water spray I guess.

Had it on a missile switch like what you want and I noticed a difference. Was as easy as the window spray. Hooked up 2 hoses that ran under the bonnet and sat above the splitter and just sprayed a watery mist when I hit the switch

The other way is a hobbs switch. Sprays when you hit a certain setting (ie 10psi). Some STi's came out with bling boot mounted bottle for factory water spray

I think taking the cheap route could see an issue with the water leaking due to the bottle being higher than the nozzles?

check the search feature and see if you can find an older thread on water sprays. theres an article that julian edgar (aka fast fours and rotarys) wrote about a kit you can buy that sprays automatically when your car NEEDS it. when you give the car a burst of wot, it DOESNT need it- the cooler is quite cool, but heats up quick shortly AFTER a hard burst.

this article is really interesting, and they tested average temps through a run of various speeds/accell. etc, and this kit keeps temps stable, by spraying WHEN YOU WOULDNT- in fact it seems to spray at odd times, but when the cooler needs it.

anyways, do a search, its a great read.

are you running a pod filter? or CAI?

this sounds more like general heatsoak in the engine bay, like a hot intake manifold and pipework rather than the cooler. the cooler will only be getting warmer and warmer if you are boosting a lot, without a break.

The spraying needs to happen before the a burst or after to cool the intercooler back down.

jc807 im just running an f6 snorkle with k&n panel filter.

does anyone know exactly where abouts the washer bottle pump is and how big it is?

just thinking maybe I could T off the water line and install a second pump off of that
