On a recent country trip, I confirmed that my T has a mild/moderate diff whine that can only be heard between 90 and 100kph. It is not usually apparent as most of my driving is faster or slower than that.

Having read the horror stories of diffs being replaced with ones that sound worse, I am hesitant to make a fuss. My previous car (Maxima) had a mild transmission whine at 60 to 70 kph. It never got any worse in the 3 years I had the car. The Nissan service manager told me - what you have to ask yourself is "Do you really want the tranmission pulled apart to fix it?" The answer was "no!!"

It's all very well to say the car should be perfect, but life's not like that.

I think I'll tell the service manager about it at the 3000k service and see what they suggest - I go to a really good dealership and past warranty experience on a second-hand car I bougt for zeke Jr was truly outstanding. So, at least I can trust them to do the right thing and advise me the best they can.

I'm mainly posting this to see if anyone has any other ideas. Maybe a totally silent diff is too much to expect?

Regards

zeke

Zeke, I got a similar diff issue with a N/A xr6. At speeds over 100kph the diff will clunk as you put your foot down on the accelerater. It does this half the time. And only in 4th gear. (it is an auto). I took it back to the dealer to get them to have a look at it so they tightened a few bolts and stuff but it still does it. I will ask the dealer again at 15000km service.

I have a whine in my ute right on 100km exactly, it's really annoying!!!

I think the noise is coming from the diff anyway?

I would be advising the service manager as soon as the diff becomes noisy. This was a problem with the AU and we had to replaced LSD's from 1500 to 10k's. It became such a problem that Ford changed their supplied from the one they had to a Spicer rear end.

If you don't report it, Ford don't get the feedback advising them of a problem until it's too late.

As the saying goes, if you're unhappy with something tell the provider so that they can fix it, instead of telling your friends (potential customers) to avoid the product.

I had a similar problem with gearbox whine in the Alfa Romeo, I took it straight back to Rick Dameliens and the gearbox was replaced immediately.

They would rather fix something than have people unhappy with the product.

Now, if you lived in Wilcannia and you had a whine in the diff, you just need to park the car near a local hotel and the whine would be gone by the time you get back.......

I had a whine in the diff of my ute at 100 km/h only. They checked it at the 1500 km service, and then again at 4500 km, then they replaced it under warranty. They apparently take a sound reading of the whine, lodge a report with Ford, then at the next service check to see if is worse, if it is, it can be replaced under warrenty. The second diff is perfect.

The diff is definitely an area where Ford cuts costs in their cars.

Our XR6T didnt whine but had what l would consider bad driveline shunt. When the local dealer measured the slack in the diff it came back at 25mm, half of the allowable spec before they would/could do anything about it. Problem with changing a diff that may have a whine, that while annoying, is not too bad is that you could end up with a new diff with a lot of slack and so driveline shunt. Our new GT even has shunt, nowhere near as bad as the T but its still there.
