straughsberry a quick question , when you say there breaking down do you mean a slight miss or a power loss of one or 2 kws. whats the power loss when there breaking down .

also unless you test say 5 or 6 full sets of each diffrent brand its kinda point less doing this test I recon beacuse whos says you dont just get a bad set of one or anther brand. .

im running the cheap as ebay ones and there fine have been for over a yr now , and even the ford ones I had from new were fine I only changed then beacause I had a engine miss problem and bought another set to see if that was the problem and it was not a coil pack related problem . nizpro cheacked the stock ones as well and they were fine after over a yr.

Breaking down means an obvious miss in the igniting of the fuel so you get farting, popping and an obviously changed exhaust note with massive loss of power.

I describe a phenomenon I've experience as "going soft" where there is no ignition break down, no popping or farting in the exhaust note but there is a sight power loss (seat of the pants after new coils are fitted, also experienced by others), a richer exhaust smell and even a "fluffier" exhaust/engine/igntion/somefriggenthingsomewhere type feeling.

Remember, I only noticed that my original ford coils had gone "soft" after a retune when fitting new coil packs. My car was running relatively high boost for power and both my tuner and I couldn't explain it. 18psi to make 350rwkw. I changed coil packs, fitted a looser (2700rpm) converter and came out with 370rwkw on 1 psi less boost. Now I'm not attributing ALL of that extra power to just the coil packs. I'm not even saying that the extra number of 20(kw) was all real extra power. But there was certainly more grunt going to those rear tyres. And after what I've now experienced with other coil packs going soft, I am sure at least some of the extra power came from fresh coil packs.

It is possible that I'm looking for evidence of an idea I have already made fact in my mind. But maybe I'm not.

Seems the 2004+ focus 2.3l DOHC uses the same coils as our car.. the plugs the same.. the coils the same..

I wonder really how well these things work as your still using the factory coils.. their "technology" is a capacity in the coil lead.

also. Strawberry, were one of the coil packs you tested a denso drop in replacement unit? I was given a set the other day to test.. But im rather reluctant to do so.

AFAIK, none of them were Denso. At least they weren't branded as Denso. The sets I tested are:

Set from China I brought in to test (the best of the lot lasted 6 months, still dont break down, just gone soft)

Set of ebay genuines (which I believe are fake, lasted 3 months, dont break down)

Set of Borgg (lasetd 2 odd weeks, breaks down)

Set of ebay $124 jobs (lasted 2 odd weeks, breaks down)

Currently running genuine Fords and working very well.

Starughsberry, have you tested out the weapon x ones yet (you said you were going to use it in your new build). Also, have you tried what I have asked above ^^^ (if it is possible of course)...
