just my humble opinion.

fighting - Brazilian Jiujitsu + Muay Thai is a killer.

For Self Defence in real life, Boxing and Judo (with an emphasis on standing throws) is the real deal.

Krav Maga (depending on instructor) can be quite good.

TKD is a waste of time for anything more that fitness.....Wing Chun Kung Fu and the like meh. Of the Karate styles Kyokyushin is the most hardcore ...the train very hard and do lots of sparring which makes tough fighters, but really in this day and age its not for everyone.

Whatever you choose the key is finding the right school. the same style can be taught very differently....and you need to have contact sparring opportunities.

I spent many years doing Judo and I would rarely use those skills in a fist fight. I guess if it became a bit of a wrestle I would naturally look to use those skills but standing toe to toe I would be wishing I spent those years boxing.

All rather pointless without it and not soft contact either. Don't want to be training to pull punches/strikes/kicks

For full contact try Kyokushin this is brutal but fun done this for a few years.

For fittness any Taekwondo or Karate will do if your not up to full contact you can do this for a couple of years then swap over.

Judo is not a martial art it's a sport.

same with boxing.

but both have real world applications.......again IMHO a lot more practical than some of the mystical arts. Most pub blues start/end in a standing grapple. You dont want to use ANY Jiu Jitsu ground work as you are setting yourself up for a kicking, but boxing and throws from the standing clinch are what I would be looking to work on. All the standing judo throws come from old Japanese Jiujitsu and are also used in Brazilian...ie. harai goshi which is a sweep hip throw...do that onto wooden floor or concrete and its a fight ender. I studied Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and standing throws are very important for self defence.

seems to be less of this as time goes on. that's why I think boxing and grappling either jiujitsu/wrestling/judo are good as they spar hard regularly. When I started in martial arts I started in TKD.....fair dinkum it was pyjama poofery at its worst!
