Will be interesting to see if the FPV cars hold their value any better in the longer term, especially if an FPV T6 is bought out next year. If the average FPV car holds its resale say $5-10K better over approx 5 years, it could theoretically make an FPV T6 or GT a much more value-for-money purchase in the longer-term.

I think a lot of people (me included) tend to focus on the up-front cost of the car when deciding what it's worth, rather than considering what the thing will cost you when you trade it in 3-5 years down the track.

I think the economy has more do do with it than the car.

The fact that rates are at a 30 yr low makes it affordable to purchase a new car as opposed to a near new or used car. Hence the glut in the 2nd hand car market.

Increasing equity in properties also allow people to refinance and purchase a vehicle using equity rather than their own cash , so the resale factor certainly suffers.

I agree that the depreciation value of a new car is a big loss, but we all know the feeling of ownig a brand new car and enjoying it. Relax, a car will always cost you money, but hey you can't take your money with you when you die......... so enjoy it today.

It'll settle down, but you've got to be realistic about what the car will be worth down the track - check the 3 year residual value column in Wheels/Motor, which I assume is based on 20,000km per year...60% or thereabouts is about normal.

From the examples above, $24K for a 3yo VT SS is pretty fair (and roughly what I reckon a 3yo T will be worth when the time comes), but $12K for VX SS (albeit a ute) is terrible...I sold for cash my 4yo VT S with 160thou on the clock to a dealer for $12K!

I think the main reason for it being hard to sell the XR6T secondhand hand is because they are still relatively "new" and many people probably consider it's a better option to spend a few more $$$ and buy brand new instead of a "as new" secondhand car, I think people suspect theres something wrong with a car with very few km's on it being sold privately.

Just slightly off topic one of my unconferted mates just brought a VY com a crap exec sedan with 18000 km on the speedo and only 10 months old for $24000.00 new they are $35000 so I think Vy owners will have to be more worried than us about resale value.

I have just recently traded my T on a XR 8 and I got $42,000 for it. The trade in amount was a little on the low side, I thought but I expected that. I change my cars approx every 6-12 mths and I lose approx $2,000-$5,000 every time but if I left it for 12 mths or longer I would expect to lose a lot more than that. Just my 2 cents worth.

P.S. The T is a damn lot more refined than the 8 but what the 8 lacks, the sound of it makes up for it. The T also "feels" a lot faster than the 8.

The same thing happened to me back in 1998 when Ibought an WRX evo 3 club spec. Only just got one and then when it was time to go no one wanted it. Traded it in on a BMW and got the payout. Sold the BMW privately 2 years later and easily got the payout. Go figure?

There are many potential purchasers on the site and they could do well to look inot buying any of the cars for sale as I dont know anyone who hasnt really looked after their car more than the average.

Maybe a forum members car is worth more as they are more likey to have looked after it!

I wouldnt buy Ken 24T's though.... Its been washed so many times that its not HgAg anymore its now back to bare metal.......
