Ba 4Spd, Just Bought A Ba ... Should Have Done More Homework!

I've been running around with 370rwkw through a built 4 speed for a year and it is still shifting very firmly and hasn't showed any signs of even being bothered. A "full" rebuild will probably cost you around 3000 plus converter and they are good to about 400rwkw. As the boys have said run a trans cooler and with regular servicing they do very well. All things considered, they are a very good box.

if all you want is 'a bit more poke' then what are you worried about?

throw 1200 bucks at it for a flash and custom tune, and she'll have a car that will whip your dunnydore all day every day, and the trans will not care one bit. im running 330rwkw through mine, I dont ring its neck or redline it too often and it's fine.

haha, my other "dunnydore" is a carby fed 355 and runs consistent 10.60's N/A , so bring on these XR's :P

Hi Guys,

im a newbie in here so go easy on me. I was driving the wifes ba mkII xr6 2004 auto the other day and it wouldnt change gears at all no matter what I did, doing about 2750rpms at 80kmh and the D was flashing on dashboard. my best mate works at a big ford dealers and he asked around and I got back that it went in to limp mode which can be caused by a few things. temp was normal, checked coolant and its still all green, im thinking dicky solenoid. parked the car went into restaurant for tea, came back 2 hrs later and its perfect and hasnt played up since, but its on my mind, any suggestions appreciated greatly. it doesnt have the seperate cooler fitted yet which I am going to get for sure.

I had a look in the manual they say that it is due to the tranny fluid being hot or the fluid is low

My 4spd has taken punishment for 2 years (approx. 40,000Km) at around 350rwkw. (but blown a motor & turbo)

Still feels puurfect & fluid stays red.

My theory is: dont "punish" car in 'auto mode' kicking back gears (switch to seqen.) and dont flat shift (I.e. for gear changes: back of the gas..click up cog, or down cog...then back on gas, as you would in a manual).

I recon kicking back gears full throttle in 'D'/auto is what does most damage...

Plus, a decent amount of pwr means u dont have to 'flat shift' for good performance....

..I'm pretty confident my "mission" has a decent amount of life left in it yet..

Looking at getting a BA or BF xr6t to tow my dunnydore around, does anyone know the gearing that is in the ZF and the BTR 4speed? I hear the diff ratio is really low in the ZF's, can I be expecting a loss of torque in the early gears if I go with the 6 speed or are the first couple of gears in the ZF a lil higher than the BTR's?
