Replacement Turbo Required - Questions

Hi,

I have a 2003 BA XR6 Turbo. (Stock). I just came back from a 500km round trip on Sunday and the turbo was making the sound of rough grinding in it when accelerating.

I took it to Bryan Burt Ford today in Chermside, Brisbane to have it assessed for what I think I already knew. They said the turbo needs replacing. The exact description from their report "Removed inlet pipe and found impellor wheel fins to be touching housing and causing noise. Requires new turbo assembly, gaskets, studs as well as oil change, coolant change, and intercooler clean." The quote from Ford for a brand new Turbo was around $4100 just for the part. They said as a better option they can get a reconditioned turbo for $2400 and have it fully installed for a total of $3186.

OK my Questions:

1. Does the description problem 'impellor wheel fins touching housing' constitute a whole new turbo or just new parts in the turbo?

2. Is the price Ford quoted high for what needs to be done? What should a repair like this cost normally?

3. Does anyone have recommendations for other more affordable places in Brisbane (Prefferably Northside) who can carry out this work?

4. Should I try to buy a Turbo myself and have someone fit it? To save on Costs. Is there a better approach to having the problem fixed?

Thanks, Nigel.

Of course Ford want 4 grand. They want 4 times the real price for everything. Go elsewhere, get a better job done all for less. Shop around and even see your local tuner.

Hey mate,

Now I am the first but def wont be last to say "F!!K FORD". Man go for a little drive to Elite at archefield. My tune wasn't done by them but they def know what there on about. Replacing or repairing a turbz wont be cheap but the blokes at elite seemed honest enough and I'm sure that they will look after all of your needs. If you spend that sort of dosh at Elite you'll leave there real happy. Cheers.

I bought my new XR6 from them. They suck big time. thier after sales service sucks. thier sales staff suck and well just in general they suck. Go to elite and get it done propperly and at the right price.

I wrote a letter to Ford about them and the car they sold me, it had very bad paint work and I think they forgot to put in sound proofing??? or is the dif always that lound ? and has anyone else got driveline snatch??? Well that was over a month ago and not one word back from either,

And whats worse is they willl keep shafting US !!! there loyal supporters. For as long as we take it. So are we going to keep taking it????

How many members on this site alone? Plus all the other xr6 and ford forums. Everyone says the same thing. mmmm

Think it might be time for an intervention

Most ford dealers seem to be the same. The dealership I bought my fg t ute from shafted me straight away. Took it in for the 3000k service. Asked them to fix the rattle in the door and adjust hardlid to stop it from rattling. They said the door was fine and the hardlid wasn't thier problem? I said fark off, U deekheads fitted it. It would be good if they had like a cost price on a falcon, Say an xr6 turbo and buy it for less with no warranty ect. For people who are going to mod it anyway. Because who would take thier new falcon to a ford dealer if the didn't have too???

Let's keep it OT so this stays open eh?

Fastback, shoot Leigh @ ETM a PM. He should be able to sort you out with decent parts cheaper than Fraud can.

Possible to fit the parts yourself if you're looking to save coin, and find a reputable tuner to do the tuning and you'll be set for large grins for life.
