Rudd website attacked in filter protest

The Federal Government is investigating reports a group of internet activists managed to temporarily shut down the Prime Minister's website.

Kevin Rudd's site, www.pm.gov.au, was brought down for a short time last night due to what is described as a denial of service attack.

The group, apparently known by the nickname Anonymous, posted warnings that government websites would be targeted in protest against its plans to filter the internet.

The Government is considering ways to block websites carrying material it believes is offensive.

The move has attracted widespread criticism, largely because of fears the filtering system will slow internet speeds.

The department is now investigating the incident.

Online civil liberties group Electronic Frontiers Australia also opposes the mandatory filtering trial, but its spokesman Colin Jacobs has condemned Anonymous' tactics.

He says the threat should not be taken lightly.

"In the past they were organised enough to organise significant denial of service attacks against Church of Scientology websites," he said.

"So if they are mad enough about [senator Stephen] Conroy's plan to censor the internet, it wouldn't be impossible for us to see well-coordinated attacks in the future."

Hackers bring down PM's website

The Prime Minister's website has been hacked in protest over a federal government proposal to introduce a mandatory filter to censor internet content.

The pm.gov.au website was brought down at about 7.20 (AEST) last night along with that of the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

There was also an apparent attempt to bring down the website of the Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy.

A check confirmed the PM's website was down at 8pm.

The cyber attack is apparently in response to the proposal to introduce mandatory internet filtering.

A message from a person claiming to be from Anonymous, the internet activists claiming responsibility for the attack, said the proposal to introduce internet filtering was a measure "only the most power-hungry of all internet tyrants [would] dare".

"You have opted to censor the internet. This is why we, Anonymous, have decided that this censorship plan should be among our primary targets for elimination," the group wrote.

"Firstly: We demand the abolition of the censorship plan proposed by the current government. This includes the removal of all targets on the blacklist, and complete abandonment of any further plans and endeavors by the Australian Government to censor the internet

"Secondly: We demand the resignation of the Australian Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Stephen Conroy.

"This is a man who has no level of understanding of the topic he is dealing with. This is a man who readily supports the abolition of free speech in exchange for social security. This man and his policies go against everything Australia and the western world stand for.

"As we see it, Stephen Conroy is completely unsuitable of being a minister of Australia, and as such, we demand his dismissal.

"Failure to meet these demands will result in our full-fledged wrath. This is not something you want to happen."

"In two minutes from when I type this, Anonymous is declaring war on the Australian Government over its decision to implement Draconian internet censorship," the posting said.

"Tick tick tick.

"Update: 7pm: and so it begins.

"7:05pm (AEST), Ministers page is slow to load, but still up."

"7:11pm we've confirmed on site (via a source) that the sites due to be attacked have been taken down from the coordination page, possibly before the raid."

"7:21pm Kevin Rudd's page is down completely. Strike one to Anonymous."

The hacker then suggests in a subsequent message posting that the attack may have failed.

However, a check of the prime minister's website more than an hour after the attack began confirmed it was down.

A spokesman for Senator Conroy said he had received reports of the hack but could not confirm whether the attack had been successful.

However, he said the people responsible were misguided, adding that the proposed filter would only be used to block illegal content.

"The campaign that they're mounting is erroneous and misinformed," he said.

"What the government is proposing is to filter refused classification content which includes imagery of child sexual abuse, rape and bestiality."

The government has been conducting an internet filter trial which is expected to be completed soon.

A report will then be presented to Senator Conroy from which an internet filter policy will be developed.

lawl....stupid FEDS still dont know how to handle Denial of Service attack related cases. Laws dont even exist in the aussie LAW BOOKS about it. If the feds had half a brain, they would hire ex con's who been busted with same crap (just like in the movies) and pay them big to find whoever is doing whatever, and prevent them from next attacks. Like a terrorist attack. Also amusing the media claims that ddos of a server is now classified as 'they have hacked the server'....damn media.

But like the feds care....

In the end, people will be caught 2 years down the track, then get off lightly....trust me...I know.

I think I have mentioned something (however very little) with other threads in relation to Oz Net Filtering and trials...

This is not intended as a government bashing post either...

For the record as much as I hate to admit it or draw Lib lovers attention - it was under our beloved Howard Government that the trials began, however were very quickly abandoned, with good reason.

Without drawing out a 50,000 word essay, its very simple - having been involved with the original trials, black lists, trial locations and some of the developers many years ago, it was found and believed to be a far better then an ideal solution and all but dropped in its original form.

They then turned and look to run such filtering in locations where it would best targeted and had worth. So the trials moved from a national based solution to filtering such locations as Schools, Public Libraries etc. this was still somewhat of an open ended trial again when I personally jumped ship and moved on to more interesting matters. KRUDD gets into power and here we go with a dictatorship oh yeah and censorship...

At the time it was going to do nothing much other then slow our already very slow internet speeds which more then 50% of Australians much deal with each day, as well as waste tens of millions of tax payers dollars...

Its a great shame to see that Mr Krap Rudder is going to sink this boat, especially when it had already been abandoned many years ago by the Lib's.

I would love to see a filter during the trials filter MR KRUDDS personal Twitter page - now that would be classic!!!

Much of the content which will be filtered will be done incorrectly, as a general rule there are two forms in which this can work.

The first is by a system of matching word usage percentage in documents, or where image filtering as such takes place it is via the level and amount of skin tone colours v's tones outside of a set range. So say if someone was wearing a cream shirt in a google image search and it appeared to be a close match to a skin tone, this image may in fact become blocked as the value of that set tone could be of high risk which in fact it could be simply a shirt and not more skin as such. The systems are generally not smart enough to 'logically' read a document from start to finish and then say, ok its a clean page just because the word "tit" or "breast" is used 20 times within a 200 work document.

So things like medical related sites get blocked as well, not just porn!

So a filter will look to do a scan over a page see sus words relating to things of concern like that of many questioned middle eastern so called organizations and either block the page, or send a report to a team of people who will look at the page and then again a human will decide what to do, block or allow.

The other is a basic black list - meaning human created list, this is typically generated from hundreds of other lists which are being updated every second of the day and people just surfing the web all day every day. Again this has a huge margin for error as it is impossible to monitor each and every single website registered and created each and every single second around the world and a even bigger factor called HUMAN ERROR!

There is also other options such as user logging, where you are logged and agree that by viewing such sites that have yet to be confirmed, you understand that personal details may be recorded and reported to the administrators (in the case some government crack pot)!

This is a very basic outline of what the principal of the filter is and a 5 mins word on how it simply wont work properly.

ITS AS SIMPLE AS THAT!

I actually remember doing a demo at a Catholic School and Jewish School both wanted to search a a porn stars name to see how well the filter would work (early days in testing).

So google image search - black listed the porn starts name, search filtered bang - all went well, skin tone and name blocking worked! Then next they changed the spelling on the name (cant remember the exact names used but lets say Lilly Thai) - search two spelling changed to Lilie Thai and bam - tits and arse all over the screen...

Woops! Hope your kids are not at any of the schools where we sold those solutions guys...

Point is filtering doesnt work and censorship is nothing short of a breach to free information on the worlds best library - the internet!!!

Spend the money a more important projects KRUDD - like faster internet, money for research into cancer, or SIDS, or Suicide prevention, maybe even building some bigger and better water catchment locations in this country...

that's enough from me on this - anymore and I will seriously start to worry for my own safety and probably just sit here waiting for a knock at the door!!!
