Im about to service the ZF 6speed and I found penrite have an oil which can be used (Automatic Transmission (ZF 6HP26) SIN ATF) Refering to http://www.penriteoil.com.au/oil_selector.php and http://www.penriteoil.com.au/tech_pdfs/147%20ATF%20APPLICATIONS%20UPDATE%202009.pdf.

Im not sure to 100% trust this as they say fill capacity is 4ltrs on there site - however ford manual says 4.7lts for service fill or 9lts for dry transmission.

Im having a bit of trouble finding where castrol says its ok to use Transmax Z - even rang the tech guy and said no you cant use this.... Im confused because dont other cars run ZF transmissions and use Transmax Z from stock - such as mercedes?

Also, where do they sell the aftermarket steal pan sumps and longer bolts?

ive serviced my zf with the penrite oil over 10000km ago and the box is as good as new ive been meaning the flush it out again

I bought a 20ltr drum of penrite atf dx - v1 for about 250 bucks from memory and just used the standard ford pan to refill that cost me 140 bucks from my local dealer

the gearbox used about 4.5 litres ive been told you will never get it all out and that's why its better to just change the oil drive around for a few thousand km and then do it again

cheers trev

So you didnt completly train the orginal zf shell oil - only did the service fill? The two oils mixing shouldnt matter because they are the same specs?

I need to get the aftermarket pan because Ive still got the plastic sump which is $260 from ford with filter (unable to just buy filter)

no you wont get it all out if you try ull risk burning out the pump, just remember not all ppl have had luck with non genuine oil, trev is the only one I know of useing the penrite and hes had good results, I know off one useing transmax z and it didnt change into gear correct, he drained it and used the genuine shell oil problem fixed, then theres others on here useing the transmax z with no dramas, I rang all the big trans mobs in SA(most of which have done a few zf oil changes) all but one said they would only use the genuine oil, one said I could use the penrite atf x1 but id have to supplie it and that theres no come back on them, im going to get it done with the genuine oil as I see it as, you use the non genuine oil it may work it may not, what happens if it doesnt the oil is then a waste, pay the 150-200 extra and ull have some come back if anything happens that's just my opinion dont wanna start a war on trans oils, other thing I noticed if you look in your service manual it states that for the BTR 4spd(BA) that you can use about 4 differant oils mobil, castrol etc, but for the zf 6spd it only recomends the 1 oil, if your going to use the non genuine oil penrite atf dx v1 is the go IMO like what trevs used, good luck

Yours and the 50 I have built and all still work a treat. Most of the time its from a bad oil fill and not filled correctly but people will believe anything!!! Use whatever you feel comfortable with, Penrite is OK a is Castrol and at stock power so is genuine oil.

I have read the fill process and can see if its not followed you will underfill the gearbox.

F6, do you use Castrol or Penrite? Im keen to use Castrol over Pentrite because of the fact that so many people on here use the castrol and that its already used in merc ZF's - Although Im unsure if there is any difference between the ZF on the Ford's and the Merc.

Can anyone confirm if they are different?

Does anyone have a source where I can get the aftermarket oil sump and bolts please?

as I said before wasnt trying to start a depate, just simple forwarding info from 3 differant transmission shops, and knowing of a fellow member from adelaide having problems with non genuine oil then being fine when swaped with the genuine oil
