Trans Cooler Install

Thanks for that, I will take a look tomorrow when I install my Intercooler. The intercooler is 10cms deep so I dont think there will be room, but I guess il see.

Where are there other options of mounting it other then under the battery as I am going to have my pod there.

I really appreciate your last post :) Really doesn't look that hard after seeing those pictures.

So the 2 smaller black pipes that connect to the thin metal ones are for the factory trans cooler that is in the radiator, Right? And the thicker black ones are for the coolant to enter the radiator?

Seems pretty straightforward actually...

I just have another couple of questions though.

The Trans cooler mounts on to the front of the radiator (and behind the IC) Is that right? Just clip on with stuff supplied?

Where the pipes used to attach to the radiator (and stock trans cooler) are they now not used? Do you just plug them up, with bungs I assume are supplied? So this allows it to bypass the radiator completely.

While I'm no mechanic, I'm not a complete moron, so I think I should be able to sort it out. When I get it and have a look I'll see how I go! Just in the process of trying to contact PWR and let them know the one I need.

EDIT: Got a reply from PWR, "Does it have the in tank oil cooler in the radiator or to heat exchanger on the side of the block?" Ours have the in tank cooler right? Do any have a side heat exchanger?

Got a reply back $220 from PWR - is that right? Have they gone up from the $120 that I keep hearing? Say I can order through telco as well

There seems to be a lot of dicking around with types/models of this cooler too - generic and falcon models... Anyone have a part number?

NVT, I ordered one from PWR direct in June last year and it cost $130.90 + $35 express overnight freight to Perth. Part number for the kit is PWO5389FD. For the XR6T you just want the generic Falcon kit with the 280x255x19 oil cooler.

Fitting it is very simple, but I suggest you remove the bumper. Even with the stock IC in place the oil cooler will only just slide in place. I would also remove the stock IC to give yourself more room to work with. Might also be a good idea to space the stock IC about 5mm forward of original position.

I could not get this to fit with a 90mm thick Rapid cooler unless I moved the radiator mounts back towards the engine. This is with the reo bar lip ground right back. With a 75mm thick Plazmaman cooler it fits with about 5mm clearance between the IC and oil cooler. The IC is about 3mm off the reo bar.

The HDI IC is not very tall so you might be able to angle the IC a bit but you will not have much room to move. I suggest you place the oil cooler as high up as you can in the center to get as much air to it as possible. The more air you get to it the cooler the oil will be.

The only other place is infront of the drivers side front wheel.

Have seen it fitted there on a few cars but I am not sure how much air gets in there.

Surely gotta be better than the stock one thru the radiator though.

The 2 thin black ones connected to the 2 thin metal ones are the pipes that run to the NEW TRANS COOLER.

You end up with 2 HOLES in your radiator you can plug up. I haven't done that though as the bungs didn't come with the kit.

Yep that's correct. It comes with 4 black plastic barbs that fit thru the fins of the radiator.

You need to take out the thermo fans, between the engine and radiator, for these to fit.

that's easy to do. 2 Screws and unplug the harness.

Also if you need more room you can undo the screws holding the top of the radiator and push it back a little bit.

You only get a few mm unless you oversize the holes but every mm counts.

If yours is a BA with the 4spd you should have the same as in the pics.

Open the bonnet and have a look down. You should easily see the 2 pipes connected to the radiator.

I think the later BF's with the 6spd have the one next to the block.

Guys,

As per attached picture, I have a tranny cooler (for my 4sp) fitted to my car but is in series to the radiator.

This "size" of this cooler is: 19cm x 25cm x 1.9cm.

I'm now thinking of bypassing the radiator.

Is this cooler large enough OR should I replace it?

I am not sure if it will cope with heavy duty towing or high load for long periods of time but betting the fluid out of the radiator loop can only be a good thing.

Yours is installed right up high, where I should of put mine, and would get more air flow so it should be fine.
