This will be my 3rd Turbo.

First was a KB Laser 2 door, sports with twin carb. I dropped in an import

1.5Lt, fuel injected turbo from a Mazda Famiglia. Every nut and bolt matched the Laser to the extent of mounting points and wiring loom for the ECU.

With a VL Turb fuel pump, 2.5" exhaust, boosted to 12PSI it chirped first 3 gears and emabarrassed many V8s, WRXs, 200sx. What a quick car. The look on driver's faces as you pass them in a 2 door Laser was hilarious. The standard clutch, g-box, diffs are tuff little units.

Second as per my sig. is a TX5 Turb boosted to 10PSI, to be picked up by its new owner any day now to make way for our new toy. Cannot wait....................

Cooper S with homemade turbo kit.......dont go there

Mitsubishi Galant GSR2000

TX-3 Laser 4 x 4 Turbo

BA XR6Turbo

How did the Cooper go? My missus wants me to rebuild one from scratch and have it go like the clappers but I thought turbo charging would be a bit hard on the donk. This is my first turbo car but I always wanted a Sierra Cosworth RS. Went in a heavily modded one once and couldn't believe the power. Non the less I'm more than happy with my XR6T. :birthdaywish:

On my 8th turbo car, so there's a bit of history to my addiction;

1. ’82-’85 1981 2.6l Sigma with Rajay turbo; Stromberg carby; draw through system; used to blow oil seals; disbelieving V8 owners would wonder about this stock looking wagon as it flew past; even then insurance companies did not like turbo cars

2. ’85-‘88 Pulsar ET 2.5” exhaust, 3 turbos; 1 bar boost; Group C racing cam; problem couldn’t get enough fuel to motor; HKS FCON piggyback computer; very quick little car; horrible torque steer; V8 killer; original turbos were oiled cooled, then replaced with water cooled; insufficient aftermarket expertise

3. ’88-’97 the car I loved most; played with 4 turbo variations including custom TO4; chip; custom exhaust, extractors & external wastegate; IC; Neales wheels; Recaro seats dangerous in the wet; 180kw at wheels at 12lb boost; great to drive when not wet

4. ’97-now MY97 wrx upgraded to Garret GT30 ball-bearing; front mount IC; chiptorque chip; 3” exhaust; fast but a bit laggy

5. 2000-now Sti 3 turbos tried; Apexi replacement ecu; Apexi front mount IC; big injectors & fuel pump;4” exhaust; 1.5bar boost; very quick

6. ’02-’03 1992 180sx jap import; good mods when purchased; used in Japan for drifting; very quick street car

7. ’03-now MY03 wrx ; wife’s car; probably will remain stock

8. ’03-now Ford T ; stock (at the moment but not for long)

I remember (when I was young and foolish) racing a Sigma in my turbo Cortina at obcene speeds (180km/h+) and the damn thing was pulling away from me! I used to blow away 351 GTs, Chev powered LH/LX Toranas and Monaros and the like but this Sigma was something else! Dunno what was done to it, had to be turbo, couldn't catch him to ask!

I've had two turbo's but I don;t think I'll buy another.

I had a TX3 4WD Bubble style in 1988 and a 1999 WRX. Both good cars but I do believe that the 'rush' of the car when it comes on boost masks the fact that it is a little engine being called to do a big job.

When it comes to other cars I have had, 80% have been V8's and Euro sixes. The Alfa 147 was the first NA 4cyl I had bought for a long time (mainly because my wife bought it)

I can understand the adrenalin rush people get when driving a turbo car but unles you have driven a big cranky Big Block engined car, you won;t understand what that seamless sense of torque is.

Plonky,

There's a huge difference in the torque of a 4 cyl versus 6 cyl turbo car.

Generally, with typical mods, I'd compare a turbo with a normally aspirated car of double the cubic capacity. So when that comes to a modifed 4 litre Ford turbo that'll be a truckload of torque.

How did the Cooper go? My missus wants me to rebuild one from scratch and have it go like the clappers but I thought turbo charging would be a bit hard on the donk.

The Cooper was one of many, I had a 69 MkII Cooper S out to 1380cc with 641 cam weber, straight cut close ratio gears, LSD, 10" x 8" minilites with re grooved race rubber , not bad for a road car in NZ. I used to work at TVNZ in Avalon and go home to Inglewood on long weekends to see girlfriend....under 2 hrs most nites....and I am still alive...ohhh what we did as youngsters :afro:

I then dropped a turbo setup from a 1600 mitsubishi cordia on it.... turns it into the biggest dog ever  burn pistons, melt exhaust valves, catch fire, but when it did go it would break into wheelspin in 3rd gear at 70mph :oooh: It completely wreaked a balanced nice little rocket. dropped the lot in the bin after a year. This is back before any real electronics were available. All done manually.

and to rub sart into the old wounds in Unique Car mag old Coopers are going for over $15000 for a mini!!! :afro:

First Turbo , previously XRs & Commodores. The T is absolutely chalk n cheese when compared to its predecesor in every dept. All of it good.

Poll results should provide Ford with some interesting feedback , but then again waiting lists have already said the T should stay.

Question is how to ensure strong 8 sales post version 2 T
