Wow!

Thanks for the detailed reply. l had stumbled across TSN after visiting Whirlpool (www.broadbandchoice.com) but found the line rental thing a bit confusing, you have explained it very well.

Cheers, l am off to Telstra to see what they can do.

No worries.

Just a word of warning too. The "ISDN Internet Plan" (the $16.50 data call cap option) is very new, and heaps of Telstra employees haven’t even heard of it yet. Most will get it confused with "Bigpond ISDN" which you most definitely DO NOT WANT! Bigpond ISDN is about the same price as TSN, but capped at only 1GB a month downloads, which is a total joke if you want to do anything other than basic web surfing.

If they haven’t heard of the "ISDN Internet Plan" just mention the $16.50 a month part, that you want to use your own ISP, and persevere with them until they track down the right info. If they even mention the word Bigpond slap them around the head with a dead trout, as Bigpond has nothing to do with the Telstra ISDN Internet Plan!

Good luck! :innocent:

Check out Internode (http://www.internode.on.net). In summary

ISDN - Unlimited access / dual channel $95 / month, 2Gb download, extras at .18c /Mb.

ISDN - Unlimited download / dual channel / 120 hrs per month, extra hours at $1.00

As for ADSL..above the rest. I'm on their PADSL-512 Green Plan. 4.5Gb per month download, 512/128 speed for $80 per month. The cheapest I know of for this time of config. Far cheaper than Telstra, TPG or any others which claim to advertise the cheapest rates.

Make sure you read the terms and conditions before you enter into any agreement.

Never had any issues, performance is excellent, and are always on the ball. Check them out. The fact that the cost is paid for by work is even better.

Although I've heard good things about Internode's performance, their $95 a month plan is a hell of a lot more expenisve than TSN and has a 2GB download cap!

TSN is $45 month for a 128k connection with unlimited time and downloads. Performance is excellent.

Well, l went into Telstras local outlet in town this afternoon and asked if l could get ADSL. They did all the checks and it came back saying ours is a manual connection or something similar meaning that a tech has to evaluate the line. l think l will sign up with ADSL through Bigpond and try my luck. If that doesnt work which l suspect it wont, then l will sign up with ISDN.

Called Netscape and told them telstra reckoned that there was a fair chance we could get ADSL after Telstra told them we couldnt and they reckon that if we do then its a breach of the Trades Practices Act. Will be interesting :afro:

BTW the Netspace plan l had choosen was a 512/128 connection, free uploads, 6GB per month,12 month contract for only $70! that's cheap

Thanks for all the advice guys & gals :)

I use Telstra ADSL. It does the job I guess. Anyway, heres a great website for someone in the market for broadband in Australia. Enjoy.

I wish I could get ADSL, awaiting Telstra to upgrade the RIM that is in our area preventing any ADSL service from being provisioned in our humble little estate.

Still on 56K Dial-Up, oh joy!

At my last place or residence I was using Telstra Cable, 512/128, not a bad service.

I wouldn’t say a “favourite topic” :). I just like to share the info where possible as the ordeal of me getting anything better than 28.8 with Telstra has been frustrating to say the least. Because of Telstra’s pathetic infrastructure, and the practise of splitting phone lines (pair gains and RIMs being the most common), many people are in the same situation as I, and can’t get ADSL.

Unfortunately getting a good ISDN connection isn’t as simple as just signing up with an ISP like ADSL, so it’s a matter of doing lots of research to get the best overall combo (which IMHO is Telstra ISDN Home + Telstra’s $16.50 ISDN Internet Plan + a TSN unlimited account), hence the reason I’ve learnt so much about the various options in the meantime!

If you cant get ADSL Telstra just want you to sign up with “Bigpond ISDN” which funnily enough just takes one phone call or clicking a link on their site. However like everything Telstra, it’s a giant rip, and you can do so much better with other ISPs. Its taken me a few months to research every option available after ADSL was rejected (satellite, wireless, ISDN, cable etc) and unless you have cable or wireless in your area, then ISDN is definitely the best option after ADSL.

An update.

l tried getting on Bigpond ADSL after getting knocked back by Netspace but they too said no go, as you would expect

Decided to reload Win XP and find a modem optimiser programon my puter; the speed improvement was amazing. l managed to find a really cheap dial up plan that we have since switched to - $7.95/mth unlimited downloads/time, catch is you have to sign over all your STD/ international calls to them also, but since their rates are cheaper than Telstras l think we will save money there too  Cant go worng, its probably costing me less than a buck a week :)

For those interested the company is Tenex Homepage

Now l just have to wait for Telstra to fix this crap phone line we are lumbered with.

ADSL 512/256, 14GB cap, spare backup dialup account. And free trafic to netspace ftp's and other netspace servers, like free p2p networking.

Netspace

they're always reliable and I rate em highly. Never had a problem with them, and I download 30gb every month for free off the p2p networks, such as pipe. I keep 520GB of hard drive space because of downloading so much stuff.

how much? $99 per month. That's all.:sick::bowdown:
