Is After Market Paint Jobs Poorer Than Factory ?!

Hi guys.

I had a genuine fpv bumper which was in new condition painted in a different colour. Took it to a panel beaters I'm familiar with and I told them to sand it down good so I still get the nice definition in the edges.

I've only had the bumper bar for maybe 4 months at least and the the amount of stone chip damages it has now compaired to my stock bumper bar is insane ..

Had my stock bar on for 2 years, it only recieved about 5 stone chips to the plastic. but my freshly painted fpv bar has atleast 15 chips on it as the paint seems to flake off Extremely easily and I see the previous colour behind it..

Is this a common thing or did my panel beaters cut corners and not prep and paint enough layers on..

Very dissappointed with this to be honest.. :(

I'm guessing they didn't quite rub it down good enough, if its actually lifting away once it starts to chip, I'd be taking it back and getting them to fix it. but as one other has said, sometimes when you do paint over an old colour it can cause problems.

sometimes painting over old paint is a risk, as the old paint may have been of poor quality, or there may be too much paint on the bar, best bet would be to sand back as much of the paint as possible, go back to plastic even if you need to, re-primer the bar, and go from there.

it will mean more work and more $$ but you will get a much better finish which will last a lot longer.

hrm.. yeh I always question some paintjobs on things done for cars..

I did specifically tell them to sand off the old paint and was told they sanded it down best they could..

but if its a true fact that when painting over paint already, would make the top layer weak and flakey then I will be asking them to do it again and properly.

just want to get my facts correct before calling them up.

I had my rear bar repainted awhile back cause some one hit it. The paint started to crack and peel off. The panel beater said it was from rocks hitting the back of the bar, but shouldn't happen that easy. So he resprayed it for nothing. Now 6 months on its happening again. Not sure how much sanding went on the first or second time, but I'll be going back again and see what happens?

panel beaters dont know what sandpaper is anymore. They DONT sand. They charge extra for this and you will have to stand by them and watch them do it to be sure. Even then it will be a minimal sand

Once they have painted over the unsanded original colour, the paint work is stuffed. Nothing you can do except take it down to bare metal.

After market paint jobs are usually crap compared to factory but there is the odd exception like Mirage in Perth who do a spot on job but they only do BMWs and wont touch a Ford.

had my front and rear bar resprayed...was only slightly sanded down primered and painted...no problems ...gave the car a real good clean on saturday found no stone chips on the bars but plenty on the bonnet...go figure

Sounds like the metallic paint has had and reaction with primer and hardener may have only been used on the clear coat only, for front bars get the base coat done with hardener as well and plastic/fibreglass needs to be baked for proper adhesion

If it was cheap they probably shortcutted???
