Seeing all the interest in the "new" engines for the future. I'm interested in how long (Kms) is the expected life of the Turbo units on the 6T. Is there a spec in the current FG range for expected life? I see 150,000 Km's is being talked about in the "new" engines. What are current experiences of members? Apart from a direct replacement from Ford, what other options are out there when it needs to be replaced and the sort of costs involved? Cheers

Are you talking about the Engine or the Turbo.... :beerchug:

Either way...how long is a piece of string...

If left unmodified and serviced regularly as per the book, there's no reason the turbo wouldn't see at least 150000kms.

Just need to make sure the turbo supply screen is cleaned regularly as well.

Modified, on the other hand, is anyones guess.

Cost and supply wise, any reputable turbo supplier will be able to source a direct bolt on replacement for a lot less than the factory components.

Just the turbo unit. Have many worn out and needed replacement since - say the BA1? How much did it cost?

Mine packed it in after 40,000 highway K's for no reaason anyone can explain as the car is not modified and serviced regularly. I know this is very low K's and hopefully unusual but it did happen, so I agree "How long is a piece of string?"

I had my BA Turbo for 185000 kms and half was at 14psi.

No dramas if correctly maintained

its only $1200 to renew a turbo. cheap as I think.

Yes$1200 is not bad.

What about alternative Turbos? Other than Ford recommended that is. After warranty, what options are there for different turbo units and what benefit would you get?

The GT3540 which is the stock turbo for BA-BF (not FG) is rated to 600hp. Near these power levels it's advised to upgrade the wastegate, flapper and actuator on these turbos.

Others who are after more grunt seem to be fitting T04z's with good results. I've also heard the GT3540R is ok. It depends on how hard to want to go.
