Hey guys,

Recent mechanic I visited has told me that my tyre size is illegal.

My sticker in the door says, 235/45/17, 245/40/18 & 215/55/16 (spare tyre)

Is my 225/35/20 legal?

According to Mr. Mechanic, you are not allowed to run a skinnier tyre then standard...

hmmm judging from this phrase in the modifications guide found here, Modifications guide Qld

"The nominal width of the narrowest tyre fitted to a

vehicle must not be less than 70 per cent of the nominal

width of the largest tyre fitted and never less than the

vehicle manufacturer’s narrowest optional tyre as

indicated on the manufacturer’s tyre placard."

I guess since my optional spare tyre is 215 in width that the 225 20 is ok?

My only question now is does that 215/55/16 size apply to the spare ONLY?

Not sure about QLD but in NSW you can't go bigger then 1 inch rim over standard. Why would you want to run a narrower tyre than standard anyway???

Firstly the site infrastructure.gov.au is a guide and cannot be used literaly for QLD you need to refer to Transport Operations (Road Use Management—Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation

1999 in particular Division 1, 44 (1)© and Division 1, 44 (2)©(I).

Which when put together state that a rim and tyre fitted to a vehicle with the prescribed pressure must not be less than 26mm smaller than the diamater specified by the manufacturer excepting the spare and that this combination must not be less than 70% of the widest tyre fitted while at the same time for a vehicle manufactured after the 1st of January 1974 the track of the vehicle must not be reduced.

I should start charging a fee for this stuff......... :slysmilie:

Most 225's are illegal due to load rating. Get 245x30x20 they're a lower profile (less overall diameter) than a 225x35, are correctly load rated for the falcons and perform better :-)
