Just for giggles and sh1tes:

2009 Caterham 7 CSR200 CVW7

This is a cool looking car, but honestly, I can only see the parts totaling 20K, add another 20K for intangible expenses.

Redbook price: $129 000

Feel free to add to the list - I get the feeling that it won't be long until someone posts the W427.

Any thing that costs more than an F6 but is slower, GT anyone.

as for the Caterham hand built is never cheap and they are no means slow.

They only charge about 4000 pounds more for it to be prebuilt as opposed to 'build it yourself' in the UK, so hand building doesn't add that much to the price. Such a high price defeats the purpose of a simple, road legal go-kart. Cool car, but the price is ridiculous.

Caterham price is spot on, your not going to find too many cars that will out accelerate a supercar, and run rings around them on the track aswell as cost a quarter of the price.

Rubbish - the concept of the Lotus was reasonable price, light weight and decent mechanicals to outperform heavier more powerful cars. They were never expensive like that. There are many kits that are good quality and will be as good as the Caterham for much less.

Thanks Cobra, my point exactly.

The point of buying a Caterham or Ariel Atom is affordable track performance. We are talking a purpose built stripped down light car with a 4 cylinder engine, not a high tech supercar or F1 car. There is no way a Caterham is worth 100K+ even if it could do 0-100km/h in 3 seconds and produce 1G of grip. It has none of the high tech equipment or luxury you'd find in a conventional car. With out all that weight, it's not hard from an engineering perspective to pull super car numbers.

The Caterham should cost 40-50K max, the other 90K is bullsh1t.

I think one of these with a nice 500hp F6 motor in it would do orite against the caterham....prob cost less than $100k if you can do it yourself or know people who can do it for you for a reasonable price...

Build a car that competes with the caterham for less than 100k then, engineer it, and drive it on the street and track.

Good luck!

You do realise that you're talking nonsense. Even something like the Hyundai Getz cost millions to ENGINEER, but once that's done, production can be done in under a few thousand per unit.

Bottom line is, it cost Caterham probably just 20K to produce a unit once a design and manufacturing process is finalised; allow 10K more per unit to recover development costs. I think most of the excess money goes to the company that imports the Caterhams to Australia. I don't hate the Caterham at all, but somewhere along the line, some middleman is performing a major rip off job.

But hey, if you want to spend 130K on a Caterham, it's perfectly fine with me. It's 30K less than a Nissan GTR.
