I was at my local ABS (Auto Brake Service) store today picking up a part for my brothers ol' effy and I thought I'd ask the bloke what he recommended for the front brakes on the T... cos they're f*cked.

I mentioned that DBA4000 slotteds were the popular choice with most guys and he said he could get DBA gear but assured me that Protex grooved rotors and TRW pads would be better and cheaper.

The quote for 2 front rotors and pads came in at $334 which seems very reasonable if they're any good.

Needless to say though, having never heard of Protex and not knowing anything about TRW pads, I am more than a little skeptical.

Has anyone used Protex grooved rotors before? Or TRW pads for that matter?

He mentioned that the TRW pads he had in mind would "sh*t all over" Bendix ultimates, another warning sign to me cos usually when someone makes a claim like that about an established product, they're talkin' sh*t.

Penny for your thoughts Guvna's.

Hey Clem

In the trade protex are normally seen as a cheap alternative, although some workshops like to fit cheap parts to their customers cars, if given a choice I like to stick to brands like DBA etc, but you should match your brakes to your driving habits etc

sounds like someone does not stock DBA/Bendix or makes more money on selling the cheaper stuff.

2 things I will not skimp on and that is Brakes and Tyres, as they only need to fail once to kill you.

Protex are no worse than the :beerchug: that ford put on there. Anyway, you will find that most of those cheap brands come out of the same factory, they are just packaged differently when the container lands.

Reliance, Protex, cheap RDA etc are the same thing. I worked at a major importer and I have used ones that cost $8 each to land from china (a few years ago now) and I have had no issues at all. The quality does vary in batches though, so check them out as soon as you get them out of the box. make sure you clean the rust and crap off the hub before you mount them, wash them with a can of brake clean, and it some decent pads and you will have no worries.

Hey Ghosti,

If you're thinking of changing calipers etc, I'd suggest picking the brains of some of our performance distributors.

They'll be able to pair a suitable set of calipers to a set of DBA's 4000 or 5000 series, that'll no doubt put a smile on your face.

Just checkout the 'where to buy' section on our website.

All the best.

DBA Steve
