yep its built to handle the power we're gonna throw at it & them some hopefully. I could of gone to nearly any box but I chose to stick with the zf because there such a smooth all round box. I dont know what its like its still sitting on the workshop floor waiting to be fitted with the eng, fuel system & tailshaft. I'm told after it resets itsself for a lack of a better word which should take around 1000klm it'll be like the day I got it & it'll hold good power.

Sound's like once you throw in a built bottem end mate that auto wont live to long, ive been looking into auto's and here's a write up on a 4spd auto I found which may be adapted to suit the 4ltr 6.

The baddest of the bad, this is a non-electronic 4L80E transmission. Some of the features are: Full manual shifts - the transmission will be in the gear you select and changes to any gear you choose when you move the selector, no computer or wiring needed, Red Eagle clutches, Carbon fiber band, RedEagle PowerPacks for the forward, intermediate and direct clutches, Kolene steels, Blue Plate Special clutches for the overdrive and overrun clutch sets. The 16 element intermediate sprag is replaced with a 34 element sprag, rated up to 1200 horse power depending on upgrades and has full throttle 3-4 up-shifts. It comes with a non-lock-up torque converter (#L80-NLU) and the core charge is included in the price. This is the transmission that off-roaders, big horse power streeters and racers have been waiting for. Something with an overdrive gear that you can beat the snot out of without giving it or you a runny nose. It just gets comfortable at 900 horse power. The shift kit alone costs us $250.00 and takes a full day to install. All of this can be yours for $3295.00. Every Quadzilla transmission is tested in our test truck. It doesn't get any better than this folks. If you have over 500 horse power you may want to consider this transmission. Add $150.00 for LS1 type bell housing bolt pattern (7 bolt). The late model type are built from 1997 to 2001 cores, known to be the best.

Can be ordered with a 11 inch torque converter rated at 1200 horse power for an extra $529.00 (#6XX). Gear ratios, 1st 2.48, 2nd 1.48, 3rd 1 to1, 4th .75 . In other words when in 4th gear a 4.11 rear end ratio would be equal to a 3.08 rear end ratio. Can be ordered with a 2.75 1st gear ratio and a 1.57 2nd gear ratio for an extra $699.00 (John Kilgore). Can be ordered with a deep cast aluminum pan for an extra $212.00. Order the hardened input shaft if you have nitrous ($449.00). It comes with a speed sensor for an electronic speedometer and can be equipped with a speedometer control unit to control a speedometer cable (#68 below). We now have a tail housing available for a gear driven speedometer cable, see below. The 1997 up 4L80E transmission can be used on the new Chevy 572 cubic inch motor, because both have 7 bell housing bolts. The freight runs from free to $165.00 after freight discount in most cases. The prices includes the core charge, but if you want to return your core for a core refund of $300.00 to $450.00 depending on year and model less freight, just let us know.

I looked at the 4l80e before I chose the 4l65e. The main reason I steered away is it's size and price. It's a big unit and the tunnel will need to be modified. Price is also an issue. To handle 1000+hp one place quoted 10k without converter. Yes it's a strong box that is made to handle big torque but it would be an expensive option. A Powerglide with a Gear Vendors OD would be cheaper and you'd have a stronger combo which is less parasitic and no tunnel massaging required.

How much was the 4L65E straughsberry and what's max power it can handle ?

The 1 I posted above is $3295 USD, which is as we speak at current prices (3,295.00 USD=3,685.43 AUD)which isnt to bad plus freight, then converter which im sure Dominator or TCE should be able to knock up, but it would be non lockup that's the only thing, just get the converter a little tighter to compensate that's all.

Only other mod's would be possibly tran's tunnel which until it was here you wouldn't know exactly how much modification's needed, if any need's to be modified mind you, and a X-member which would be a few hundred to knock up, also a 1 peice tailshaft, say $1k for a pretty decent 1.

You would be looking at about $6-$7k I would guess though.

The 4l65e will probably be around $4500 with electronic lockup converter and handle up to 850hp. I'm told they can be built to handle 1000hp but I'm not sure how reliably?

That price may be just about right but without a local distributor, I would be hesitant to buy a trans from the US. And I don't see why you couldn't have an electronic lockup converter?
