this will probabily sound a bit strang but I have never owned an auto before, im loving the zf box btw. Did some trauling but could not fidn anything.

I have been told when driving an auto (especially when parking on a hill) you should put the handbrake on changing the auto from Drive to Park. Aparently on hills this means the hand brake is holding the car ratehr than putting excess pressure on the gear box :beerchug:

is this correct procedure or total bs?

Its correct, you dont want to load up the transmission, it will hold the car, but you will get a massive clunk as you change into gear to drive off.

I am amazed how many people who drive automatics (of any car manufacturer) don't know or even FEEL this?!

Not to do with the original poster, as he is new to autos.. and what an auto to start on.. the best!

I watch people all the time slamming in and out of Park or getting their trans locked in gear as they don't know what to do!

Should be incorporated into the parking test. Funnily enough I thought it was as my teacher taught me this from day 1... yearssss back :P

The ford service department told me people are impatient with the autos. He said when going to reverse for instance, you have to wait a few seconds for the transmission to engage before trying to move off.
