hey guys

got to pick your brains. now my old car was a 95 falcon.

new car is an 03 xr6 turbo 5 spd

when I purchased the car the cooling line that runs from the thermostat to the turbo (in the area) with the hose that joins the two together was split. so I replaced it and was working fine. couple of weeks later its loosing coolant :-S so I check over all the lines and there is no sign of coolant loss anywhere. this has been going on for weeks and am starting to think that the turbo could be using coolant? what could be the problem. its deff not that hose anymore but it seems I have to keep topping it up. what could it be???

can you smell it......my ba was slowly leaking from the radiator side tank where it joined the core....was told common problem.....See if you can get the system pressure tested.....

I lost more fluids when cold than on long drives....as the expansion of the tank/core sealed it....

Not sure if we have a similar problem but.

I also have a 03 XR6T that was leaking a tiny bit of coolent each night (about a 10c piece worth) I called by the mechanic and we did a pressure test. Everything was good. After telling him in not dreaming things he suggested that maybe when the engine cools down the parts contract and develop a leak but when the engines is hot they parts expand and seal the leak. So after doing some searching while engine was cold in the mornings I found the leak just below the thermostate housing, there is a metal pipe, this apperantly has an oring on it that had sh*t it self. We replaced it and everything has been fine since.

Not sure if this helps you but it may.

Chris

The split hose sounds like in the past it may have been running with the wrong coolant, just water, or maybe just not serviced. If this is so and you are sure it is not leaking then maybe a head gasket? Is it running hot?

thanks for all the reply's ill look into it all. well im not sure if it could be head or not. 1 there is no excess pressure in the cooling system, 2 there is no trace of exhaust gas in the reservoir. 3 car is running perfectly normal in temp range. I just went over all the radiator hoses to find the top left hose (10-15mm) in diameter loose with water marks running down it. will drive around for a couple of weeks and see if it has coolant level has droppped. tomorrow if I have time ill pull the plugs out and inspect them to see if its detonating with water in the chamber. also the car has a bit of a rough idle. its done 104000 now. and on the last service was at 93,000 for plugs. did oil last weekend. :-)

I had a slow leak from the pipe going to the turbo, I couldnt find it anywhere until I took it in for a service. My mechanic had it on the hoist and found it as it was below the turbo he could see white stains from where the coolant had dried. 1 brass washer later and all fixed.

A nice little trick if you still cant find it is to take it for a drive and park it in your garage, cover the floor with white paper under the engine bay and check for green stains in the morning. Should help you pin point where its coming from
