Yes you will need a retune, as the intercooler will be flowing a lot better than the stocker, and at a stab it will be overboosting if it doesnt get tuned.

now I'm a bit skeptical, cos I've always been told that u need a retune after an upgrade like a cooler or exhaust. But my mate has an s15 and has dialed up boost from 7 to 15 psi, has a full exhaust system and dump pipe and monster intercooler filling up the front bumper... And no tune. It's been driven hard for the last 2years like this and absolutely no issues with the car....

So what's the deal with that?

To get the most out of extra boost, coolers etc, you need a tune as air fuel ratios would have changed completely and you run the risk of blowing your motor. I bet your mate if he had it tuned, he would get more power.

yup he would definately get a fair bit more power out of it. but as it stands theres slim,if any chance of his motor blowing up.

also, dont we have 02,air temp and fuel sensors which are designed to deal with air/fuel ratio changes?

im getting stories from both sides, ive got tuner mates who say u definately need a tune, and others who say you definately dont.

has any1 here actually upgraded the cooler without a tune and blown their motor apart??

I'll try find my dyno sheets from when I fitted my cooler that said my afrs were hovering around 14.7

That should put anyone off flogging there T without a tune

The T's run open loop on WOT which means there is only minimal fuel/ign compensation. If you make enough of a change to the way air is entering and leaving the engine the ecu doesn't know how to compensate for these changes. Many other vehicles run closed loop on WOT which are able to compensate for changes providing the computer has tables in its map which match these changes. If these changes are above and beyond the computers maps it will simply go in to a rich limp mode which is why you see a lot of WRX and 200SX with black bumper bars. They have boosted them without a tune so the computer simply runs richer to stay safe. Hence why your mates car has survived. His car is probably running a rich tune with retarted timing. Should he have it tuned he will see an increase in power and fuel economy.
