Hey crew,

Driving back from a mates the other night and decided to get into it, and that's when it happened. BANG. No more diff.

So, its a 2006 BF MKI F6 ZF 6 Speed, what diff centre should I put in it? I've heard they make a 9" bolt in centre kit now days? I have my workshop chasing that up now. What gears should I run? The car is fairly standard now but will be worked on over time to be quicker.

Cheers.

I would recommend leaving the same diff ratio in it. 1st gear in the ZFs is very short, so a shorter diff would make 1st almost useless IMHO

I thought you could retune the ZF gearbox so that even with a shorter ratio diff, the box handles it fairly well? Who knows - its going to a diff shop soon, so ill have the answers shortly.

I'm not that stupid to think that the gear box controls the diff gears, I get how that works. I thought I had read somewhere that the ZF gear box was able to be programmed to run with different diff gears and somehow changed something around in the gearbox to do so.

How ever, this could be on the ZF 8 Speed in the new 2010 760Li BMW's I was reading about, Dad is looking at getting one so I did some research.

I'd say the most "re-tuning" you could do was so that the speedo was correct, however I'm pretty sure it gets the speed from the wheel speed sensors...

Needless to say, gears are gears, unless you change the ratios in the box the rpm will be higher with a shorter diff ratio. You could go slightly shorter, but if you already struggle with traction in 1st, forget about it with shorter gears... <_<

At the moment - no issues with traction. How ever I just have exhaust and injectors, so not a huge amount of work done. Its at the shop now and I'm getting a quote for a 9" centre kit, along with just replacing the standard diff. The guy down there told me there is a different ratio I can use that is better/more suited for the ZF? Anyone know what that might be?

Ill update soon.
