New Turbo Owner Issues/questions!

Hey guys,

Bought a BA MKII turbo 6 speed manual (60,000km) about a month ago and loving it!!!! They previous owner had done a few mods which he said included flash tune running 12psi peaking at 15, cooler, SS growler kit, injectors and valve springs. He said it makes around 270rwkw.

I didn't know anyone with a turbo to check with at the time and so being a nubie took the guys word for the work I couldn't see/wasn't sure about (ie- valve springs and injectors). Call me stupid for not checking (many have haha), but was checking the gap on the plugs last night and had a closer look at and believe the injectors are still the stock ones (blue 32lbs) and now I have doubts about the valve springs too. All the other mods are there though so its just the injectors and springs that I am doubting. I know you can drill/modify the injectors but how would I know? and as for valve springs....no easy way to check I guess?

(I know he hasn't just replaced the injectors with the stock ones and sold them cause the car runs smooth as)

The car hauls ass, but because I have nothing to compare it with and I am unsure. I am looking for an exaust at the moment (x-force 4" stainless turbo back) and obviously will need a retune. I'm thinking I will get some siemens 60lbs injectors done at the same time for peace of mind.

I am looking for low 300's, so presuming the valve springs are standard, is this acheivable? or should I be getting springs and a fuel pump as well?

From what I have read, pitlane seems to be running a tight ship so think I will pop down there to have a chat, but any recomendations would be greatly appreciated!!!! (I live in camberwell)

Cheers guys!

there's no way to tell if the valve springs have been done unless you have receipts or confirmation of work by a reputable mechanic/installer.

Injectors (standard) are blue. If you get the part number off them you could find out what model they are.

Has the car got a standard clutch still? If it does, and it's not slipping at ~270rwkw (drive in 4th gear at 70 km's/hr and floor it, if the engine revs but the car goes nowhere, the clutch is slipping) then I'd be very skeptical as to whether it has as much power as he is claiming, as my car was fine at 200rwkw (stock) but as soon as I got to 273rwkw the clutch lasted 3 days before it started slipping and driving bad. I had to buy a Mal Wood option 3 clutch (which is a very very very good clutch) to hold all the power.

My 6 speed manual BA MKII Turbo made 273rwkw at 10psi (injectors were basically maxxed out here) with just a custom tune by Pit Lane, so it's easily achievable and not out of the question.

I then installed nizpro valve springs, siemens 60lb injectors, walbro fuel pump, process west stage 1 cooler, and got a re-tune, which meant Mick could keep the boost at 12psi accross the whole rev range (because of better fuel delivery and valve spring reliability), resulting in the extra peak power to 300rwkw. The exhaust and wastegate on the turbo/actuator are the limiting factors now. With a full exhaust and wastegate/actuator upgrade, I could make low to mid 300's with ease.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Best course of action would be to get it on a dyno ASAP to make sure everything is in order, the alternative is not a pretty proposition :spit: Don't know of anyone with special powers that can sense what valve springs a car is running without pulling the spanners out, but it can be identified if you need new springs fairly easily by a pro.

Mick (Pitlane) lives and breaths these things so you can't really go wrong there.

The injectors are blue and the part number is the stock one. It has the standard clutch and if in 4th and boot it slips a bit here and there. As soon as I noticed ( about a week after I bought it) I have been reading about the mal wood clutches and the option 3 sounds awesome, will defiantly be the replacement clutch I go for.

I think I will do the siemens injectors anyway to be safe, fuel pump and get the valve springs done and tune it. Then save for the clutch and exhaust. Just the delema of which order to do it, power first and be easy on the clutch, or clutch and then power...

Cheers for the response, that was great, think I will drive down to pitlane tomorrow and have a chat with the guys.

If it were me and I was trying to save a few bucks , get it all done at once, your clutch is on the way out and an exhaust will require a retune in any case. Prioritiy would be get a clutch bed it in then power up IMO

Definitely go with the option 3.

I'd get Mick to check it all out for you. Make sure everythings running sweet.

Did the owner supply you with the flash box he used to flash it? If so, take it all to mick and get him to check it/adjust it.

If I were you, I'd get the car checked as the first thing, then get the mal wood option 3 installed.

Then save a bit more, and get the fuel pump, injectors and valve springs done, and you'll know everything's safe.

Mick will explain all of this to you anyway, go and see the man!

Yeah I got the flash box, so will bring that along tomorrow. Getting the car ready for the power does make the most sense and the option 3 clutch sounds the go. thanks for the advice mate, has been a great help
