Plonky,

I appreciate your comments and I agree that strictly speaking, the mod is not allowed. I have kept the original muffler and had flanges welded to it so that should the day come ......heaven forbid..... that I attract the attention of the law in a negative way, then it just bolts straight back on......no harm done.......5 min job.

I am curious, however, about the law and how it is applied. Without exaggeration, I think I would drive past no fewer that 20 cars every day that clearly contravene the EPA regulations. I think in the overall scheme of things, the difference to the noise is minimal compasred to what is out there.

Just my opinion :)

Hey Bez if only 10 -15% of cops would pass an attitude test then only 2% of motorists would even get close to passing.

Good question Quiksmurf. Quite frankly a normal everyday person would probably never come into contact with the Police except for Highway Patrol Police. They come into contact with anyone who uses the road.

Recidivist traffic offenders become very well know to HWP Police and naturally the law is used judiciously to neutralise their behaviour.

So in answer to your question, a guy with a modified car that pokes around, always keeps to the (dumb) speed limits in populated areas, gives it a go out in unpopulated areas, doesn't race people away from lights and generally behaves themselves could drive around with a Jumbo Jet engine under the hood and probably wouldn;t get stopped.

However, once you start chucking laps around town, give it a big boot up to the speed limit and back off (there is a ticket for that as well), gas it up out of corners or have grossly defective modifications on your car, you're bound to come under notice sooner or later.

The application of the law is always judicious. I could guarantee that on any car on the road a defect could be found if we looked hard enough. The best advice I could give is to be pleasant. It may not get you out of a ticket but you will probably get a much cheaper one or one with less points.

As far as booking women goes, I would rather book them because they EXPECT to be let off!

:o  I don't understand. For what???? Driving 'furiously' or whatever the term is??? Whats it matter how quickly you get to the speed limit???

Yes there is a ticket. One is Negligent Driving 3 Pts $176 (doing something a prudent and reasonable person wouldn't do) and the other is Drive Vehicle cause Unnecessary Noise or Smoke 3 pts $207( the old Undue Noise)

To give it a big boot under full load up to 60 will naturally cause a louder noise than normal, or if the car is exceptionally quiet then that manner of driving would be negligent.

Don't worry, most of the time they are given to recidivist traffic offenders so unless you drive like a galoot and have a big sign on the car saying "BOOK ME" you should be OK.

The law is an ass, True, but it is there to reflect what the majority of the community want. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate some cretin driving in your street at 2am when your trying to sleep and there was no ticket or legal action that could be handed out.

Sorry plonky didn't mean to get you all fired up. I'm sure you know the rules as you do this for a job I was just simply stating what I read in zoom magazine. They did a driveby test with the guys from the epa and they said all was ok.

In the EPA regs there is a section which deals with (amongst others) ram pod style filters and externally venting blow off valves

So what does it say about BOV's - surely must be a regulation against those ricey valves "Pfffsssstwhoosh"??
