Unfortunately my wife prefers an auto and argues (thank you Mr Ford dealer  ) the SSS gear box should satisfy my need to control gear changes.

Be careful of SWMBO-They have ways of ramming things down your throat

One thing I like about the SSS, is when you crank up the volume to Deep Purple Made in japan, highway star, and you cant hear the donk, just slap it in slush mode and cruise. After 12k I found that my driving style is

start off in auto

use gears to engine brake

move shifter sideways back to auto

I mostly use performance mode around town so the box aint searching for gears.

And when it comes to draging ricearicos the auto and motor work as one, cant get enough of that

IMO don't let the jounos scare you away from the manual. If you want a manual get one. If you don't, you will probably always wonder if you should have. On the other hand, if it's not all that important to you or if you want to please your wife, go for the auto.

.

l agree, dont let the jurno's put you off getting a manual. The T5 isnt the last word in refinement but l think its ok, and certainly not bad enough to pass on for the auto.

Driveline shunt is another problem experienced by a significant number of BA owners that is worst in the manuals. Our car has this, but still it wouldnt be enough to make me choose the manual over the auto.

l am fortunate that my wife is a pom and so used to driving manuals. l can get her to agree to a manual box quite easily by letting her choose the colour (with my guidance of course!!)

If you plan on modifying it (ie more boost), do yourself a favour, do NOT buy the manual - mine is already making funny noises after a week.

230kws at the wheels will do it - proven.

Exactly right. If you want to modify the car to produce more hp the auto is the way to go. Although the manual is easier to extract more power the the auto is the strongest of the two.

This was said to me by a friend at fords engine department. Which has already replaced a manual gear box in a T that he was modifying at work.

The auto box is a beauty, smooth, seamless changes (especially in comparison to the Late model camira box) and the SSS option make for a winner.

But I would order a manual if I had my time again. This car would be more enjoyable to drive in manual form.

Thanks again for all your comments. At this stage I think I’ll opt for the auto, but now I’m wondering what the extra features of the Series II will have (supposedly due out Q3 2004).
