On my STi I've just replaced the Autronic SM4 with the VIPEC.

Autronic no longer has proper support, 3 different tuners cound not get the Autronic to idle properly with 850cc injectors, whereas the VIPEC idles perfectly and is easy to tune. VIPEC just not well known enough yet, but word is spreading.

Brian

Try SAS (Silverwater Auto Service) for Autronic stuff.

Vipec is setup by Ray Hall who sprouted plenty of sh*t on the capabilities of Autronic when they first came to fruition but wasn't part of the business. He tarnished their name quite a bit by making big promises that weren't delivered. I'd personally avoid Vipec because the man is a douche.

from what I have seen Ray Hall is brilliant, especially with the Toyota 2jz-gte. the reason I sold the SM4 I had for my Supra was because of the lack of support for the Autronic after Ray Hall was gone.

if anything Ray being involved with Vipec would make me lean more towards it rather then away just because of the work he did with Autronic

This XR6T has a full Atomic engine package, fully forged bottom end, oil pump, monster camshafts and springs, big plenum, front mount, injectors, manifold and a T51, should make decent HP at the treads.

With roughly this package without a proper tune I am making 680rwhp. I cant wait to get rid of the flash box and turn days of turning with the flash box into only hours of tuning with the Autronic.

Any thoughts on your ignition?

from what I have seen Ray Hall is brilliant,

he ran a website called a u t r o n I c . com when he wasn't directly associated with the company & advertised features of the ecu that weren't developed yet I'd hardly says that's very useful to the public which is evaluating a product to buy. Infact its misleading advertising.

The toyota club I'm involved in swear by autronics but majority of the guys avoid Ray Hall like the plague.

If I use Autronic SM4 ver 1.09 then I will use an Autronic CDI 500R,

If I use the ViPEC V88 then I will use the ViPEC XPS-4 CDI (M&W).

This engine was tuned by another Flash Tuner hit 400KW atw and had trouble exceeding this number.

He then managed to get 600 HP at the wheels and it developed a DEATH RATTLE.

The owner has returned it to my friends workshop to be removed striped down and repaired.

I had a look through the oil return hole in the sump and viewed bigend bearing material in sump and around number 2 bigend journal.

My bet is detonation.

Are you stating that from experience? I wouldnt call a Motec M800 or a WOLF V500 a lesser product if you have actually tuned a car in real time. There are many BAs out there running aftermarket ECUs. Karmens car went 9.44 @145.10mph with an Autronic and that's 1 of about 6 cars I know of with an aftermarket ECU.. Just because Nizpro couldnt get it right doesnt mean that no one else can. Its just shows that were not experienced enough, nothing to be ashamed of.. If you have ever used SCTs Advantage you will just how much of a pain in the bum it really is to use.. Load up a processor code and get tables that have no relevance to the car what so ever. Then load the box, load the car etc..

Not to mention, I can put a 3 bar map sensor on an vipec and it has auxilery outputs for us guys wanting to run nitrous, then there is aslo launch control, anti lag etc... Lesser products hey ;)

Dont get me wrong for street and mild racing applications the standard ecu works a treat..

Dave

I agree.

You have to look at your application. The top aftermarket ecu's are geared towards easier (live) tuning, maximising power, and racing applications. Motec M800 is great for that.

My application was capability to have cold starting, good idle and low rpm drivability, which the old version (V2) of Motec software did not do well, and that was stated by a Motec employee in my presence (don't blame Nizpro). Remember that was 4 years, and the newer versions of Motec software are probably much better.

If I was just interested in full race application with big budget then a high-end ecu would be the better option.

For the other 99% of applicatons (most of us) where drivability is the primary option the Flash option is by far the most cost effective solution.

I'd heard such rumours around the forums.

Fact is I am using Vipec and it does what the Autronic could not do, and the idle problem was sorted out easily with the VIPEC. I did retain the Autronic CDI.

fyi the Autronic replaced the Power FC, which was good up to a point, but not to the level I have taken the car.

Not to sure on the exact price at present, but a V88 is under $3000 and a XPS-4 CDI is around $1000.

ViPEC do many Plug and Play ECU'S.

Not for the XR6 though unfortunately.

Aftermarket ECU's require piggy backing to the original ECU in XR6T for all dash functions etc to work correctly.

So have you got the VIpec in the car and running - is this a BA?

We have managed to get the SM4 to work in the BA XR6T - cams working ok (I think a maximum of 25deg retard due to autronic setup problems). This was a cable throttle setup though. Factory BF ECU does better cam control though.
