On one hand you have the consumer, who wants more features/performance/safety for less money. The other corner has the government who put laws in to have emmissions/safety and taxes against vehicles. Another corner has the greenies, who want clean emissions, unrealistic fuel economy, recyclable components and zero non renewable resource made cars and finally you have the poor carmaker who has to try to balance all the demands from the 3 sides. In an ideal world, we would all be driving carbon fibre cars weighing 500kg with electric motors with 300kw that had all the creature comforts and cost $10,000.00 and never needed any service or parts and when you finished with it, you just buryied it in your garden as fertilizer.HAHA.. nice one.. so true though Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/58012-why-are-modern-cars-so-fat/page/2/#findComment-887422 Share on other sites

Posted 09/06/09 12:22 PM Share Posted 09/06/09 12:22 PM or...get an EVO 9. electric mirrors climate control AC (single zone) and electric windows. that's it.Yes it goes and handles like heck but If I'm going on a long drive? I'll take my V8 landcruiser thanks, auto box, cruise control ect ect...armchair on wheels.(they both use about the same in fuel and I swear the 100 has a tighter turning circle.Interestingly, the evo X managed to add all the niceties but keep the wieght down.....Anyways, I'm selling the EVO.I'm happy to wear the extra weight for the comforts......I'm getting old, I'll use my 2350Kg daimler for a daily driver from now on.Screw "gas mileage" if it worries you that much, buy a toyota starlet and go join www.Imagaygreenpiecetosser.org Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/58012-why-are-modern-cars-so-fat/page/2/#findComment-888382 Share on other sites

I went from an xr6 turbo to lighter and lighter cars (went to an s15 then to a wrx, and now to an s2000). I must say the xr6 turbo has great power, however nothing beats the enjoyment of taking a light bodied car through the twisty stuff.that said im sure many of you do not find most of the lighter cars available these days (evos, any honda etc) practical for day to day use (as the xr6 was designed for).bring over the mustang I say! For their size they're porkers. The first WRX weighed under 1200kg, now they're nudging 1500. My old KH TX3 turbo 4WD weighed 1080kg, the XR5, a 2WD is a proky 1300+.Ideally we could all have F6s for cruising, and light, nimble series 8 Rx7s for the twisty stuff.
