Honest opinion here having owned both an EVO6.5 and a Version 6 Sti.

On a good hot day and anything less than a very windy road the Falcon is not going to be any less capable point to point than either of the above.

Throw some rain and corners into the mix and it will be a different story.

The truth is that all of the cars discussed are enormously capable. For me I think the Falcon is simply more diverse and in all but extreme adverse conditions isnt going to lose much ground to an EVO or Sti.

well, I can see where your coming from, I still don't think an sti would be definatively quicker but I think it is much easier to get the speed out of it in the slow corners because it is such a simple handler, little chance of a spin or a slide. But that takes the thrill out of pushing a car, no drift or oversteer to catch.

Just some quick comparisons.

Glass's Guide implies that an 07 STi Sedan is retails for $46,600, or you could get a FG XR6T for that with options

an XR6T is rated at 11.7 l/100km for auto 12 l/100km for manual and the 07 Sti at 11.6 l/100km

Subaru Servicing is every 6 months 12,500 km (ford yearly or 15,000km)

pretty sure STI tyres are Bridestone Potenza, which are worth a stack.

Subaru parts are usually worth about double Ford parts, which are almost ridiculously cheap sometimes. (for example, a 2009 subaru liberty tail lamp $398.22: FG XT falcon lamp $176.00. inc GST)

Although buying an 07 vehicle means you wont loose so much money in depreciation, which is usaually the biggest cost.

1521kg

vs

1728kg is 207kg.

As always with a car though, I've found its more about which one you fall in love with, if that happens to be a subaru then I hope you enjoy it. Because like any car all that really matters is that is starts and stops and you enjoy it.

I drove a VX SS, s2 gtst and then the XR.

Handed over a deposit after a 5 min spin in the xr :beerchug:

True, I haven't looked into the servicing costs yet actually...thanks for reminding me! However, the quality and the amount of problems that I have heard of with the Fords does scare me...as does depreciation. I mean we don't buy sports car as an investment true enough, but what did that other thread say? They half they're value in 3 years?

I guess I'll have to see what it feels like from the seat of the pants test...

depreciation is defo a Ford killer...

a few months back I was thinking of selling my F6 along with the WRX.. WRX is 03 with 50K kms and F6 05 with about 55K kms, both manual, both immaculate, both FSH yada yada yada..

WRX rrp brand new was like $45k, F6 about $65k... but trade-in offers were within 2-6k of each other !! privately theres about a 10k difference

how far will u be towing your bikes and how often....I have a gt forester and the xr is that much better to tow my jetski with especially out on the freeway and such. returns about 10.5 to 12l per100 when on cruise doing the speed limit which wiithout a doubt is using less than the forester does. I know it's not a wrx but pretty similar and if towing is going to be a fair part of the cars life I would buy an xr without a doubt. really cant picture a rexy even towing 2 bikes having enough torque to just pull in wat ever gear you like anyway that's another story. just my thoughts on the towing part.

As much as depreciation is an issue with later BF and FG I suspect earlier BF and BA models (at least here in NZ) have taken as big a hit as they are going to.

Probably not much chop for anyone in the market to buy new or near to it but I feel buying my BA I will probably not lose a whole lot over a couple of years.

Hi Jim,

I too have wanted a XR6T ever since they came out, but haven't had the cash. I have just picked up a BF MKII and absolutley love it. Definitley worth the wait. Not sure if I got a good deal or not, but driving down the road in my dream car, the $$$ didn't enter my mind. Hope you get your dream soon.

not many other cars u can get 40+rwkw from just a tune they are great to modify and u dont have to spend heaps to make good power unlike other cars. I was considering a vz ss 5.7 drove that first the steering was heavier than my vs ss and didnt real give the wow factor when u kicked it in the guts...still went good but I thought it would of gone a lot harder drove a bf t had heaps lighter steering which I like in a car and couldnt believe the power down low it made..!! so I brought it im on my 2nd 1 now and still loving it!! :D

Fair point Matt. I can't see myself having anymore then about 5 or 6 trackdays a year. Mainly to Sydney, but there could be the odd one to Melbourne too (can't have a trackbike and not put it around Philip Island!). There will be highway trips (without towing) as well, but I know that the Rexy will not be as comfy as the Ford. I believe the Rexy's have around 400nm don't they..which I would have thought would be able to tow 400odd kg's fairly comfortably. Admittedly, the torque is higher up, but with the 2.5l engine, there is some from down low.

With regards to mods, I don't really care about power. The only power related thing I would bother doing to either car would be exhaust system. With the Ford, I'd be doing brakes/suspension first.

My want of a manual car is also another factor, as I've heard a fair few people with things like driveline thumps and the like a lot more with the manual then the Auto.

Bear in mind, I have't driven either car! THe only Rexy I've driven was a very lightly (but tastefully modded) 98 wrx (I'm thinking of a 07 STi), and the only XR's I've driven is a BA NA XR6 and my brother AU Series I XR8! Even though we're only looking at buying the car next year, I'm thinking of pushing up the test drive as I can't stand the wait to find out which I like much longer! hehe!
