Hi guys

Im new member that has been a fan of the XR6T ever since it was released, but have never had the money to actually buy one (uni student, long term). I am interested to know what other cars people looked at / considered when getting the falcon, and why you decided on the falcon in the end.

I will prob be able to finally get an XR6T mid next year, other cars I would consider are V8 Monaro (manual), Nissan 350Z (manual), Mini Cooper S (manual), Porshe 944 turbo (manual). However due mainly to how unique and brilliant the barra engine is I am very strongly leaning towards a BF mk2 Turbo with the ZF box.

As you can see I like quite a range of sizes and styles, and I was wondering if other members are the same.

Jim

Hey Jim,

I'm almost as new as you! And while I haven't bought an XR6Turbo as yet, I am seriously considering one. I was originally looking at getting an Evo or a Mazda6 MPS. I would have liked something like a 350Z or an S2000 (although the S2000's are more expensive then my budget for one with less then 80,000km on it!), but with the other vehicle being a motorbike, a 2 seater is not very practical! Then I also remembered that I will need to tow (mainly a motorbike trailer with a coupla bikes on it) and while this is techinically possible with the Evo and Mazda, both manufacturers reccomend that you do not do this. Both cars actually have a "0" towing capacity which can cause headaches with getting the bar fitted, rego, insurance etc...I digress.

So my criteria for the car was, fast, 4 seats (if not 4 doors), able to tow. To fill those boxes, one has to look in our backyard! Otherwise, you're looking at expensive Euro $$$ which I don't have!

Looking in our backyard, the Aurion is just not quick enough, and I've always been a Ford man, always liked the XR6T, however was always hesitant based on my brothers experiences with his AU Series 1 XR8. However the XR6T is great car. Insurance is much cheaper then any of the others I was looking at as well and like Rixt just said, much better appointed then the Evo that I was looking at.

The only two things I'm trading off is the handling through tight twisty corners (compared to an Evo VIII or IX) and the depreciation. The fuel consumption is much friendlier then I thought it would be too.

Hope that helps!

always had old style big power v8's 70's fords and holdens , then got the bug for something newer and I did drive the XR8 first but after having decent power v8's already it just didn't impress power wise , then I tested the T and although there wasn't a huge difference in the power feel driving a stock one I knew straight away the 6T was making the power much easier than the 8 and had much more potential

bang for buck even in standard form the BF2 T is hard to beat, once modded its even better. that's why I got one, just got to wait out my warranty period until the mods come.

For me it was that or an s15 for a balance of street, drag and occaisional track days and given the general image of silvia drivers and sky high insurance (twice what the T costs me) I just couldnt justify the 200sx. Also considered an FD rx7 but your talking about a car 7 or 8 years older than a T for the same money.

all these cars you mentioned to me are proper sports cars(well all except the monaro). I got my T cause I wanted a quick car but also be able to have a large boot and 4 doors to get my wife and 1.7 kids in(soon to be 2.0)

Ive always liked the Falcon but went into Ford for a 4WD Ranger. Ended up talking figures over a NA XR6 but really wanted a LSD. After no luck (turns out to be really lucky) getting a stock XR6 with LSD and no options in Nitro was told I would have to cough up for a factory build car and would lose all discounts. Then the words just appeared, "how much then to just go a turbo with LSD as standard". I hadnt even thought about buying a T well not seriously. Never looked back and the stupid thing is there was near no difference in the deals over a stocked turbo and a freshly built NA. Ended up getting a new 09 built for me for really only pocket change more. Wonder how many people have had an NA factory built that could have walked out with a turbo, maybe ex demo, previous years plates etc?

Yeah, I'm a uni student too. I fell in love with the Falcon after buying an '06 XT, a much needed upgrade from the family Camry, and better driving experience than Commodore. All things considered, the XR6T is a refined daily driver that's heaps fun to flog. Once I finish uni, 1 or 2 years of full time work should get me the money I need, weekend job would help too.

*Subaru WRX - PROS: great corner, similar 0-100 times as XR6T, high resell. CONS: the hoon/doof-doof stigma, too harsh for daily driver.

*HSV R8 Clubsport - PROS: dirty cheap 50K now that GM is in deep sh1t, decent V8 car. CONS: it's a Holden, less low down torque.

*Late model camira SS - see above.

*XR6T - PROS: insane torquey turbo engine, kick arse induction noise with light mods, refined driving experience, ZF transmission. CONS: cornering not as good as WRX, brakes could be better, German components may be expensive to replace.

I said the WRX handles better. But honestly, I don't know how R8 handling compares to the XR6T. I'd like feedback from someone who's driven both (without the Ford fanatic bias).
