I am in a similar situation as the OP, wanting an xr6T but can only afford a BA. Not really too interested in mods, as the insurance is already pricey enough with the stock car. I have heard bad things about the 4sp auto box breaking due to fluid from some other part leaking into it. Is this a common problem, and would it be reason to avoid 4sp completely? If I cant afford a 6 speed should I just forget about trying to get an xr6t?Thanks

If that's all that concerns you then all you need to do is whack a new radiator in it if it hasn't already been done. Other than that the 4 speed auto is a fairly decent box at stock power levels. I don't think it ever gets any bigger than changing the spark plugs, apart from the usual stuff.Oh and don't worry too much mate, I've got an 02 Turbo with 90k, and it's still pretty nice and tight. Much nicer to drive than our boggo XT BFII wagon at work! Just be a little careful - they are so much fun to drive you'll buy the first one you test drive! Well that's what I did, but I think, thus far, I got pretty lucky. Don't be afraid to shop around, there should be more than a few under 20k these days. I think its from the rear diff... not all the time.. when on load..how much do you guys think its worth?

I think its from the rear diff... not all the time.. when on load..how much do you guys think its worth? The exhaust looks very weird on that car, like it's coming loose? The 6 speed manual are a very good box, very strong.Did you check the engine oil? If it's black and sludgy, it could be neglected engine wise the same as the interior. It would want to look nice and light brown..The rear clunk could be diff related, or it could be the diff bush. if it's completely stock I'd assume the diff would be fine, and it's just some bushes causing the clunkiness. Mine does the same thing at low speeds in carparks and stuff. I need my diff bush replaced. Diff bush will cos you anywhere between $500 and $1000 depending on different places. If it has premium sound, leather, etc, offer her $17 - 18k for it, if it has no other options like that, offer her $15 - 16k. never know your luck, you can always try. You'd be getting a bargain at that price.
