Flu Vacination

Howdy folks,

As topic states, does the Flu vacination actually work ?

Its that time of the year again where we are organising Flu Vacination at work, I work for a large steel company in South West Sydney, start at 6am, I worked probably 50% office 30% in the factory 20% on the road, at building sites etc etc.

We primarily orgainse this shot for the guys working in the factory as it gets quite cold working out in a massive open shed with large doors always open and all the cold steel sitting around, as we dont run much machinery, more just a distribution warehouse, we are not generating much heat.

Iv been here for about 5 years but have never get the shot, just been the tough man and never seen the need for it.

But last year I did get rather crook with the flu, then a bad case of glandular fever amongst other throat infections etc etc.

Im 23, quite fit, dont smoke, but live a pretty full on life style so im probly quite often run down a little.

Im thinking maybe I should get it this year ?

Just want to hear people opinions on wether this works for them or is just a waste of time ?

( I hate needles, If I dont need to get one I wont... lol )

My view: In a word... hell no.

The flu is the most adaptable disease known to man; thinking you can vaccinate against it is stupid if you ask me.

It depends on what strain you get/don't get... really just a lottery. Sure you might get lucky and say that everyone around you DIDN'T get the shot and they got sick... etc

Having said that, you're guaranteed to get sick if you do have the shot! Obviously they inject you with small quantities of known strains.

You don't get sick as they don't inject you with a live virus, it's dead virus so it can't multiply but your body can still make the antidote for that strain. You can feel slightly unwell after the vaccine for a week or two, I had this last year.

I was in the same boat this year, was thinking weather I should take it or not, had it last 2 years and I think I'll skip it this year.

To many variations of the 'flu' so why bother...

Its not a 'cure' just a vacationist...

Let your body build up its own ability to attack the virus, without the needle and well you will prob have more of a fighting chance IMO.

that's what I do.

friends and family of mine get it and others dont, both still get the flu (one shape or form - normally a common cold, rather then the flu, which is all to often confused).

So ride it out, rest as much as you can and deal with it when u get it!

I pay for my staff to have them and most do.

We have done this for the past 3 years and it has proven very sucessful.

There has been a significant decrease in sick days from my staff. Out of 16 only 2 did not do it last year and one of them is going to do it this year as he got bad flu last year.

It is a personal choice, but not getting flu is good for everyone and it does not make you sick.

I do not see why you want to choose to not get the shot if you are offered it as it does work.

Don't do it man. You are just putting poison into your body. Vaccination is just big business and alot of the time they just dont work and can make you sick by having it.

I knew a guy at school that used to get them every year, but he still got the flu every year so to me they seem pointless.

My work does the same every year too. I got it done about 8 years ago and never again......

Two reasons; 1: I dont like needles

2: that year I got it I had a cold/flu more than ever.

Some people say it works and others say it doesnt, I think it all depends on the person, their health/ lifestyle and the enviroment in which they work and live. No matter what you still get a cold/flu during the year its all got to do with how bad you get it.......

I'm pretty sure the vaccination is only for the deadly strains of the flu. it wont protect you from the common cold or anything like that.

as said above the flu is very adaptive, it only has to have a 4 base pair varience in the DNA for the strain to be not affected by the memory 'T' cells (testing my memory here) in the immune system, as they are very specific.

so by having the flu shot you are not immune to all strains, just the deadly one/s.

I have had my flu shot the last few years, and havnt had a bad flu, so I had it again this year, got it last friday, havnt felt ill at all from it and the nurse even gave me a lollipop

I have them every year and have never got the flu afterwards, just the occasional cold. as I work in a hospital you're required to (or that's what we're told). but I do know people who have them and still get sick so I guess it depends.
