Lord of the Rings music tops poll

August 24, 2003

Lord Of The Rings has scored with classical music buffs - by being voted the greatest soundtrack of all time.

Canadian composer Howard Shore's music beat off competition from movies such as Gladiator and Lawrence Of Arabia to top a list of film masterpieces.

More than 44,000 listeners in the UK cast their votes in the poll for Classic FM which will count down the top 30 on Monday.

Shore was previously best known for his work with controversial film director David Cronenburg, but his Rings score picked up one of four Oscars for the film last year.

It is the second year running that Lord Of The Rings has topped the Classic FM poll.

Star Wars composer John Williams is the undisputed movie music master, landing seven positions in the top 50, with three in the top ten. Star Wars is his highest at number three, while Schindler's List is at four and Jurassic Park is at 10.

John Barry, best known for a succession of Bond movie scores, has two titles in the top ten - Out Of Africa (5) and Dances With Wolves (8).

The Top 50 is dominated by films from the last two decades, although there are a number of movie classics that have not fallen out of favour, such as Maurice Jarre's Lawrence Of Arabia score at nine.

Max Steiner's soundtrack to Gone With the Wind just misses out on a Top 10 spot at 11.

Other classics in the list include The Magnificent Seven (15), Brief Encounter (18), Chariots of Fire (23) and The Great Escape (30).

Simon Bates, who counts down the Top 30 greatest soundtracks, said: "Howard Shore is following in the footsteps of composers like Mozart, Rachmaninov and Mahler in bringing new audiences to classical music."

The top ten is as follows:

1. The Lord of the Rings - Howard Shore

2. Gladiator - Hans Zimmer

3. Star Wars - John Williams

If I had actually seen the movie, I might be able to offer a comment here... (plus I have never read the book either)

Let me summarise then ... 2 loooong movies (so far), empty bladder advised. 3 loooong books, some even have pictures. :o

Oh yeh, and good triumphs in the end! (sorry, didn't mean to spoil it!). ;)

... anyone else got any other great literary work that needs a review? :bookworm:

How about:

Dune.......the whole saga

(note: EID has got the 'weilding way' down pat, she can make certain frequencies with the vocal chords that can kill a leaf nosed bat (in mid flight) at 100 yards, poor little blighters have blood oozing from their ears, nose and eyes)

The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich.

The Amazons And The Swallows.

For starters :huh::nod:

The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich: Short guy with top lip hair and pen*s envy loses to good guys in heated debate.

The Amazons And The Swallows. Embarrised to say I haven't read this one, but judging by the title, I'm guessing it would be better as a movie anyway, nudge, nudge, wink, wink. ;)

I've had "The Two Towers" on SVCD for around 4 months now, downloaded off the newsgroups, and so I went to the DILI markets and picked up the proper DVD bout a month and a half ago. When I say proper, it is the Screener DVD so every now and then these words saying "For your consideration" appear on the screen, but I can live with thatl. Only cost me $8US. I saw the movie 6 times in Brisbane before heading back to Townsville. The opening was packed, I loved it. I got's all 5 books downloaded, (The Hobbit, and the Silmarilian in addition to the three) Read em all cept the Silmarilian. Quite a difficult read for us dwarven folk.

On my list of "things to do before I shuffle off this mortal coil" is to buy a leather-bound set of the trilogy.

I'm not going to use it for reading, just for looking at .... ummmm, my precioussssss.
