Hey guys,

My car is using so much petrol and I need to know why... Hoping to sell it soon, and this looks terrible...

Had a bad tune in the car making it use about 14.6L/100km's so I flashed it back to stock. I have had it stock for a few weeks now and the car is still using 14.6. I see lots of T owners use around 12.5 about town and lower on the freeway. I'm sure they drive harder than me...

Now I know you will all say, don't use the loud pedal so much, but I drive like an old fart... Even my mother and GF tell me that...

Is it something like a blocked/caked/broken injector that the ECU is trying to compensate for? Has anyone got any idea's because I'm at the end of my tether with this...

Thanks,

Dan

definately something wrong. my FG gets a very hard life and averages 12.7L per 100km.

could even be a stuffed O2 sensor

In some cases you'll get better economy by "giving it a bit", I.e. by not letting it labour at low revs. Is it auto or manual?

If you nana it every where... I'd say take it some where safe and give it a good hard flog and try blow it out :P my record for fuel consumption is like 11.5ltr to 100k and I was stoaked everywhere else its normally 14 to 15 lol

have you tried disconecting the neg on the battery for an hour

it may have picked up some bad habits from dodgey tune

resetting the ecu may help

I average a bit over 15L/100, that's not giving it a hard time either, only the occasional squirt... that's full time city driving in a 6 speed manual...

id say mid 14s is as good as you will get in a manual in city driving conditions..

I dont think 12.5L/100 in the city is achievable in a manual, maybe only in the 6speed auto in economy mode.

I'm with tab on this one, my best economy is when I give it a little.. if you try babying it then you sit off boost (not very efficient) and barely coast along

This thing about flogging it to improve economy or some how "clean it out" is a fallacy.

To see what is going on you need to check fault codes to see if any sensors are not behaving correctly and you need to put a wide band sensor on to see what it is doing on cruise.

I put a wide band on a BA a few years back and was surprised to see it cruise at 14:1 closed loop and give sh*t economy whereas with other car makes cruised at 16:1 and give great economy.

The economy can be improved heaps and its all to do with the Engine Management System tuning and its sensors operating correctly.

My experience is you can have a completely worn out engine with heaps of blow by and very poor leak down test and still program the engine to get amazing fuel economy.

Ok thanks everyone,

It is a 4 speed auto. I know what you're saying tab, but I don't drive that slowly :3gears:

our06t, I had a new battery put in the other week, and I'm pretty sure it was disconnected for a while before the new one was put in. How do I reset the ECU? Is that a job for a tuner?

Where do I take it to have it looked at? Ford? My Mechanic? A Tuner?

Maybe I'll have to just save up and get it tuned properly then... Seem like the best idea? thanks Torana :spoton:

Cheers,

Dan
