Hey guys, just wanted to find out what the Alaskan Malamutes are like as a family pet. We are thinking about buying one from a breeder and wanted to find out what they are like with kids etc. We understand they need alot of excersise etc and need to be trained from a pup but anyones experiences are greatly appreciated. Thanks,Matt.

I had a Malamute they are awesome dogs, very good with and very protective of children, no good as a guard dog however as they don't recognise boundaries. You do need to make sure you are the Alpha Make or Female in the pack or you will likely have issues.

Lots of exercise and lots of brushing but a truly awesome dog!

dude you will want the highest fences in the world - they dont jump em they just step over them - and I ahve seen a pup chew through 3/8 and 5/8 copper air conditioning pipe - good with kids but can be a bit rough (not on purpose just by sheer size)

HAHA,yeah I found that as I did a search after starting a new topic :3gears::spit: Didnt even think that this would have been asked before. The main things I keep hearing are, training, walking, let them know whos in charge, brushing, bathing, they grow pretty big, they are very smart and they can be destructive.

We are minding one for a friend at the moment..

I HATE IT.

It howls instead of barking which is an awful sound, is SO disobedient, and the amount of fur that this thing leaves behind is ridiculous.

It would be the VERY LAST breed of dog I would ever think about owning.
