Thermosyphoning or not anything that's glowing red should be left to cool down before switching it off.I usually wait till the temp stabilizes before shutting down engine or till the turbo stops glowing. Depending on circumstances sometimes 1min sometimes 5-10 minutes. A bit of care goes a long way with these cars lol.

It's not just the water cooling all parts of the turbo. A constant flow of oil is squirted onto the turbine shaft and bearing races when the car is running keeping them from overheating. The actual bearings them self do not need that much oil to operate correctly.

Yes turbo timers will idle the car down for you.

But they are illegal in most states.

So just to be sure we should run turbo timers on our cars, if the law didnt come into play.

It's a brass bearing cage. And yeah it's more than double the price of the regular bearing pack. And the turbo will spool slower because the brass bearing cage is heaps heavier.

Fair enough. But the topic title is about failure not quickest spool or cheapest turbo. And the metal bearing cage is much more durable than the plastic one yeah? Put me down for a brass bearing cage please :)

Seriously, how many turbo's have actually "failed" as per the thread title?? Bugger all.

This topic was done to death in the early days - have a search.

Very simple actually, drive sedately for the last couple of minutes before your destination, let it idle while getting ready to get out of the car and turn it off. If you are at a race track, let the thing cool down by idling with the bonnet open.

The fact is they are water and oil cooled and run nothing like the turbo's of by-gone years.
