The main problem with the water cooled thing is that when the engine stops, the coolant stops flowing. that's why you should run the car for a littel longer and cool the turbo down.

He ran off :spoton:

The theory is that thermosyphon will keep the coolant flowing, but does SFA as far as the oil flow is concerned. So yeah it will continue cooling the turbo down but not really effective if the little bastard is glowing!

Well, if the water pump stops, there's no more coolant flow is there? I beleived that thermosyphon would get rid of the oil or coolant out of the cartridge, hence reducing the chances of it carbonising....

Yeah there still is coolant flow because the turbo essentially boils the coolant and causes the circulation to continue. :nerd:

Definitely wouldn't be as effective as a water pump though...but that's Ford's theory. Refer to second paragraph of opening post :spoton:

Very good post.

Might have to add another reason to the list, once we see a few more boosted FG T's

I could hear the coolant still flowing through the pipes after I shut down the motor on my last car (ke20 4age turbo), so the thermosyphoning definitely works. Not sure how effective it is, I ran a turbo timer as well though.
