Hi this is my first post just been reading all of yours for now but, I am about to place an order for my new XR6T and am unsure weather to go for the manual or auto? What are the opinions of you folk who already have them

Having owned and driven both I prefer the auto. If you want to do mods in the future go the auto. That said it comes down to personal preference. Do a search I'm sure this has been discussed at length before. Good luck with your choice you will be happy with either.

Only you can make that decision mate. I have opted for the auto and am quite happy. There are a number of other people here that have got manuals and are just as happy. It depends on your driving style, what other people (such as wife or g/f) that are going to be driving the car as well. Do you do a lot of city driving in heavy traffic? If so, perhaps an auto would be more suitable. Do you like driving fast through twisty mountainous roads? Perhaps a manual would be more suitable. There are a 1001 different variables that need to be taken into consideration, and what is good for me is not neccesarily the thing for you. Whatever you choose you are sure to be happy with the package that is the XR6T.

Thanks, I think we will be going the auto! with 18's, leather, premium sound, with momo wheel & knob, scuff plates and in sillohette! And get it lowered a bit once I pick it up. Had an AUII XR6 ute in Sillohette and had it lowered and it looked sh*t hot! thanks for your opinion

Welcome sykes,

This could start another 6 page war.

Manuals are great. I've always been a manual driver but the SSS is a lot of fun. I favoured the SSS as my wife does not have a manual licence and stop-start traffic can be really annoying in a manual.

Each to their own. If you want more control over your beast, maybe opt for a manual transmission.

I think I read in "Motor"... maybe it was related to the Targa car?? but I'm sure I remember reading that the Auto was good for 500nm (Manual 450nm) did anyone read the same thing (maybe it was Zoom??)

I have yet to get a confirmation from a reliable source regarding torque rating of BA auto box in XR6T....

No feedback from Ford, of FPV or dealerships.

Anyone know for sure?

Would appreciate any feedback on modified (read that as chipped) XR6T's running the auto box.

Are there any mods in the chip which change the characteristics of the auto : re change points, speed of changes, torque converter characteristics etc etc.

I don't know for sure if the auto is linked intelligently with the ECU, but it would make sense that it is. Just curious if the modifiers have cracked the code for tuning the gearbox also? and if so, what parameters can be tweaked.

I initially was after a manual, but was concerned about the hype surrounding the notchy gear shifts and the 450Nm rating.

I am keen to chip my ute but want to ascertain reliability, hence a desire to get factual manufacturer's torque rating of trans.

thanks in advance

Regarding the so called "weak" T5 manual boxes, has anyone actually heard of one breaking.

Was at APS last week talking to Rainer (sales rep) and was telling us about their 390kw XR6 Turbo with the manual tranny. They have replaced a clutch or 2 due to the increased power, but the gearbox is still as right as rain after much punishment.

The box has been strengthened since AU and Ford has tested it at well over the standard 6 psi, so in my view if you enjoy a manual more, do it. Even if mods are planned. I'm sure Ford wouldn't release a vehicle with a component knowing that it was too weak..
