Xr6t: Power To Weight Restrictions

Hi,

I am on my Ps but got my license pre July 2007 so the old restrictions apply to me, I.e. 125kw/tonne or 3.5L/tonne

On the vicroads website: http://www.arrivealive.vic.gov.au/node/199

it notes that "If a vehicle is defined as high powered under one definition but not the other, it may be driven."

with the definitions being: a power to mass ratio which exceeds 125 kilowatts per tonne; OR

an engine capacity which exceeds 3.5 litres per tonne of the unladen mass (tare) of the motor vehicle

Now according to redbook.com the 2002 XR6T has the following specs: Tare Mass (kg) 1690, Power 240kW, Engine Capacity: 4L

So power to weight: 240/1.690 = 142kw/tonne I.e. over the 125kw/tonne limit

However, engine capacity test: 4.0L/1.690 = 2.366L/tonne. I.e. under the 3.5L/tonne limit

Now because it is defined as high powered vehicle under the first definition, but not the second, does that mean P-platers are allowed to drive them??

Has any one being a P-plater in Victoria been booked?

If the rules are as you quoted then you should be right LLV. Probably wouldn't hurt to clarify with vic roads or whoever it is for your own piece of mind if nothing else.

In reality you probably shouldn't be driving one, being the reason there is a law against it. An XR6T has the power to get you into lots of trouble without experience, so has a standard falcon for that matter... but not to the same extent.

The ones you see wrapped around trees are via young drivers who push the car beyond its or their own limits. By careful if you decide to get a T, badging the 'TURBO' probably wouldn't be a bad idea either.

thanks for the advice marty, I definately understand what you're talking about.

I've been driving for 2 yeras now and would liek to think im a very conservative driver. I never do anythign stupid, and it won't change if I get a nice car. I just dont' understand why young hoons, or anyone for that matter push their cars past the limit to the point where it puts them in an extremely dangerous situation.

Hey LLV, I was 18 when I got my T and for the first 2 years I had been pulled over a couple times 4 random check up's and never had an issue about driving the car. It was until this 1 local undercover cop who was a real tight ass and when he pulled me over he fined me and said I cant drive this car till im off my p's. He didnt even let me drive the car back home, had 2 call my brother 2 pick it up and swap cars cause the cop was floating around the area and said he'll impound me if I move it from where it was. Im in VIC as well, so if you do decide 2 get a T just be careful. Some cops will let you go but if you find 1 car that doesnt, its a pain in the ass lol. Good luck with it all anywayz.

In the past, their was also a multiplication factor for engine size, regarding forced induction on engine transplants. I wonder if there is something simliar with the restrictions on ltr per ton for 'p' platers. It used to be something like x 1.4.

To be honest guys I think if you break one of those restrictions its a no no. We all know here WRX's are a no no for a P plater...... and that in no way breaks the 4 litre per tonne but power to weight its way over.
