Reliability Of Modified Typhoons

Hi guys,

I have a BFII typhoon R Spec that I am doing a couple of little things to, and basically what I would like to know is just how reliable they are?

You hear about the ford turbo engines being bulletproof, and I know that the tyhoon engines are stronger than the XR6T, but I want to hear from any typhoon owners that have been running sustained, high power outputs. I would like to hear from anyone who has had a problem with their engine after increasing the power too.

I wont be going crazy with the power, but just wanted to get an idea of what it does to the reliability of the engine and parts. It was dynoed at 255rwkw with just an exhaust, and since then has a shaker for cai, and is getting a plazmaman engine piping kit. probably all I would do would be bigger injectors, and get it tuned with the flash tuner I removed from my GT.

what would be a safe power output for to be daily drven that wouldnt but undue strain on the motor?

thanks in advance for the responses guys

If the exhaust is a full system , ie dump and cat as well + CAI get the car on a dyno ASAP to check everything is safe

A well tuned car will run 350-400rwkw all day every day, with a little mechanical sympathy thrown in for good measure.

My advice, get all your bits together and get your tuner to fit and tune the car accordingly. Saves the $ of getting retunes after adding hardware. You just can't add bits and not have the car tuned to suit. Go bang.

Not trying to tell you how to suck eggs if you already know these things

Good question! I once heard that FPV/Ford do reliability testing at 20-25% more power than stock.

So using this logic a Typhoon with 285-295rwkw should run as reliable as a stocker. (although I know guys here run much more power than that with no dramas)

From memory there is also some RTA certification/ADR which requires you to certify your car with an engineer if you add more than 25% power....does anyone know something more about this. I know its gets ignored but im sure some law exists.

It has nothing to do with power but emmissions and noise, so in reality if you are given a slip and do not pass ADR specs, potential fines are up to $10 000.Not sure how this varies by state, ADR would suggest national.

Check this out http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/dow...ns_nov_2007.pdf

You modify the power excessively beyond the guidelines mentioned and like it or not it should be certified by an engineer.

well isn't that the point ? If you mod your car it needs to be ADR compliant. How do you achieve that? with an engineers certificate no less

I run 12 to 14lb of boost with the mods in my sig to get the RWKW result. Never had any reliability issues just the usual stupid little ford QC things and a couple of annoying rattles.

Yeah ok...I think were are trying to say the same thing ....this is what im specifically referring to when I mention an increase in power does matter and its not just compliance to ADRs:

"If the modifications result in a substantial increase in power, then the adequacy of other components to

carry the increased power (brake performance, vehicle controllability, suspension systems, etc) as well as

the vehicle’s continued compliance with the applicable ADRs must be addressed."

I've got a couple of small mods and a little ghey tune and the only thing that isn't reliable is the f*cken diff bush. But they still change them under warranty for me :roflmbo:

Reliablility of the car isn't the issue, it's a mixture of the driver and tuner and how hard either of them push it...
