The Emissions warning light had been coming on and it seemed down on power, not to mention sometimes rough idle when the AC is on. After a very pricey service he hooked it up to a diagnostic box and re-set the O2 sensor warnings. When this didn't work he changed the O2 sensor for a new one. Now, just a few weeks later the emissions light is back on and the engine feels down and rough again. Obviously he hasn't fixed the problem and to top it all off he charged me $430 for the sensor, something I could have bought direct from Ford for $280.So what rights do you have with mechanics? I've paid this guy the better part of $700 to fix a problem and he hasn't. I don't want to fund his "voyage of discovery" into modern engines or keep paying for parts until he manages to hit the right one, but on the other hand don't want to take it somewhere else as I'll just be charged to repeat the same work. How would you guys handle this? If you're not rude and he is a decent bloke he will at least have a look at it for free. Dont jump to conclusions and he might be happy to sort it out. If he doesnt then make a big deal about it - chances are he was addressing what legitimately looked to be an issue. He did charge you a lot though. Filled with the same usual vague dribble that helps noone and sends 'consumers' off with a few phrases that they choose to remember and a few they choose to ignore, but should give you a few pointers anyway Warranties & Refunds Guideline (PDF)PS: Good readin' for the businesses on here too! Broaders77 Member 73 Member For: 16y 4m 7d Posted 20/03/09 03:50 AM Author Share Posted 20/03/09 03:50 AM So I took it back in yesterday and after another round of diagnostics they found the problem - 2 loose screws on the exhaust manifold. Tightened them up and Hey Presto she's fixed. I told him that replacing the o2 sensor was an expensive experiment. He told me they get fouled up and need replacing anyway. Meh... lesson learnt, go to a specialist from now on.

Broaders77 Member 73 Member For: 16y 4m 7d Posted 23/03/09 12:47 AM Author Share Posted 23/03/09 12:47 AM Unfortunately the engines still running rough on idle when the AC is on - any other time it's fine. At least that f*&*&ing emissions light is off for the moment! Do these cars have a physical idle cable or does it have to be retuned in the ECU? I'm thinking maybe the idle is just set 100rpm too low or something and the AC just pushes it over the edge into stall mode (ie, revs drop then surge)

The throttle body starts to build up with carbon, sludge and various crud over time restricting the flow at idle speed. Most of it comes from the valve cover breather pipe and can effect your idle speed. Have your throttle body cleaned up and whilst there doing that, its a good chance to check your TPS.
