If I could do my time again I dont think I would have chosen Software Engineering !!!

nothing wrong with it or I.T in general but sometimes it just does my head in and I often stare out the window thinking what if I'd taken a different career path.. jetski tester, beer taster, rally driver, playboy bikini line waxer and oil boy to name a few..

Being a sparkie is always a job that I have thought I could handle.. good coin and never a lack of cashies floating around would be nice..

I do cashies at the moment building people PC's, notebooks, home and small business networks and a couple of home theatre design/installation and kitchen design and renovations !! Ive learnt how to do that stuff myself from my own projects at home etc and can be a nice little earner but is nowhere near as frequent as sparkie work.

mate even try and do work experience if theres something you're interested in.. sucks to work for free but at least will give you an idea of what its like plus maybe some contacts.. like someone else said, its also a lot about who you know !!!!

Bloody good advice get your feet wet in a few different areas and something small but impressionable on your CV.

interesting reading.

I farking hated school. My NSW TER was about 35/100 when I finished yr. 12. All of the time I was supposed to be studying I was reading Wheels / Motor mag etc.

I went straight into the workforce 2 weeks after my last exam as a junior clerk for an international freight forwarder. first pay packed $235 in the hand.....lol.

changed employers a number of times over the years but I am still in the business.....its worked out well for me, I am the Sydney Senior Business Dev. Mgr for a company with 350 staff. company paid for me to do grad level management studies, I travel o/seas for business canning on like a mongrel every couple of months, salary is 145k and I have a significant amount of discounted company stock. I am 31 next month.

to be frank I was lucky. I fell into something that I was interested in and tried very hard, and took every opportunity I was given. I also was not afraid to get involved in new business sales work and do whatever it took.

whatever you choose to do, if you are very good......you will find a way to make decent coin. just find something that you dont hate and go for it !

I'm thinking of being an electrician now...

But I don't really know what area's there are?

There are house electricians, auto electricians... high voltage... and probably a lot more than what I know of...

So I'm just wondering if people can give me an idea what area I should try and get into... and how I should do it... look for an apprenticeship? go to TAFE? go to UNI?

What state/city do you live in?

Im currently a 4th year sparky apprentice. Last thing you want is domestic work. Sh!t pay, and even sh!tter work. Do you really want to be crawling thru tight dirty roof spaces or under houses where the dog craps itself every night. Industrial or construction is where the good money is at. Look for appretinceships thru the electrical distrubuters and wholesalers. Good pay and wont get farked over like working for a smaller company(yes that is a generalisation based on past experiences but there are some good companies taking on apprentices).

Make sure you get a comms license as a good back up.

I dont think you can get into TAFE unless you are employed as an apprentice thru a company so look for that first. You cant do it thru uni(as far as I am aware)

Try and do a pre-apprentice ship course at uni also, would help getting a start!

Any courses you can do after you start (ie the more quals you have the better, think fibre optic's and specialised stuff)

or maybe look at the defence forces to do the trade is another avenue to explore also!

I left school at 14, I`ve worked hard in the sun or in factories, getting paid crap wages.

My one saving grace was a family involvement in earthmoving equipment. I learned to operate ( adequately, that's all ) machinery.

I walked away from it for 15 or more years but returned to it a few years ago.

I get 18.50 an hour, yet gross near 70 k a year..

To do it, I generally work 6am -6pm five days a week and 6 hours saturday.

I`d love to do something forfilling, I`m fuvked if I know what that might me.

I envy anyone who had a dream of doing something and stuck with it.

All I wanted to do was bongs and ride dirt bikes.

I`ve forgotten where I was going with this..

Oh yeah, I grew up just before I turned forty, straightened right up, wish I had of done it when I was 30.. But heh, my ex wife wou ld have really cleaned up and that`d be about all.

Mate - was just remembering something someone once told me...

Prob some of the best advise I have even heard in the way of employment...

A job is just a job - but if you are in a role which you see as 'just a job' then it is not a 'career'...

A job is a chore - not a career - do something you enjoy, regardless of the $$$ and you will enjoy your life so much more then someone that slugs there guts out for coin and no love or enjoyment...

As long as your living comfortably and happy - then the extra coin will never really matter... Chase coin and you will never stop, you will just keep going and going and going chasing the next - bigger, better, harder thing... I've learned this one the hard way...

Its not a bad thing to have dreams - in fact its one of the most important things anyone can have in there lives, but make sure you dont let it get in the way of the really important things...

ps - im still thinking about my Aston Martin as I write this... so keep working towards those dreams as well - whatever you do!

If you're switched on & have at least some basic generic tickets though (HR, track accreditation, blue card etc) & are willing to work, there's no reason why you can't CLEAR $2,500-$3,000+ per week if you're working a long 4&1 style roster on one of the major rail projects in WA. Those sort of jobs are horrendous on you're body, but I don't know too many other places around where virtually un-qualified people can earn $150,000.00 a year IN THE HAND.

But in all honesty, that's not really a lot of money given how many hours are you working (well supposed to be). For a 4/1 roster I'd expect a minimum of 5K a week clear. If many of us worked similiar hours (ie 12-14hours a day) by the time you throw in meal allowances, overtime etc etc we'd take home more than 3k!

That said, I'd like some paid 4/1 style work in some random, half dangerous overseas area. Somewhere deep in Russia or Northern Africa would be great experience :)
