Posted 01/03/09 09:37 AM Share Posted 01/03/09 09:37 AM My advice, get a apprenticeship from some government body. I work for Railcorp which is the railway corporation for Sydney. Above average award, very solid job security and great working conditions. The larger the company as an apprentice the less likely to be treated like slave labour to be thrown at the scrap heap when you get older. As for pay, every qualified tradie in my depot earns >$100k. Unforntunately Im still an apprentice, although as a 4th year my base of just under $40k then you have penalties and OT on top of that.

(100K base with OTE 180k/ 180k bases w/300k+ etc)....Also spent just over a year in senior recruitment role for a huge multinational rec company (IT division)...During the time have also run my own reseller, white box building, networking, tech, consulting etc IT & T business on the side... All fun and games, however far to many people in the industry now - so to get in the door you need some background in some sort of IT based studies, if looking for a tech role expect around the 35-45 mark as your starting point for a few years without any practical know...For a sales role - you need to make sure you have a good understanding of the IT industry and some sort of tech know as well... generaly starting roles pay between 30-45K again... but best if you have spent some time in a IT sales office of some sort then into a CRM or AM role somewhere before you get into the 45+ mark...So if you looking for 50k+ and looking for IT - dont expect a base to be more for a few years...6+ years experience under your belt and if your any good at sales you should be doing 50-100K OTE, tech 5+ yrs should see you 50-90K as well...Again roles I had made placements at - Senior 12+ yr'ers for Microsoft - looking at 150-250k + roles... 12+ yr'ers Senior Product Technical managers Dell - 180K base plus... But very very very rare roles, and very very very special candidates...2-4yrs sales exp (account management/CRM) Microsoft, Dell and the likes will take on as AM's - paying between the 40-55k depending on exp... Junior Dell CRM roles I had placed in the past would only get you around the 30-35K but you would have to dazzle the pants of management before they would consider junior intake roles...General BDM roles (4+yrs exp) - 65-80K + (typical bases) - normally high targets with OTEs of 125k+, but again, lots of effort would be required.PM roles - bases 65k-80k + typically - w/5+yrs exp... OTE 120k +Anyways.... Hope this gives you some idea of the IT industry... (this is a very rough guide)...btw - keep in ind IT is an industry with one of the higest staff turn over think hospitility is the only one higher then IT...one day earn 100K next out on your butt with nothing for months... ZAP No boost, no bottle, just my foot on the throttle! Lifetime Members 7,935 Member For: 20y 9m 1d Gender: Male Location: Sydney Posted 01/03/09 10:12 AM Share Posted 01/03/09 10:12 AM ZAP, I'm just wondering what courses you did to run this IT company? if any? Non initially, but 15 years ago IT moved so quick, there were not many courses that could keep up with the immature industry.I have done specific industry qualifications and courses now, but it is not needed to be a great engineer. How much do you need to know about IT? Lots, I have 15 years as a hands on Novell/Microsoft engineer, but I run a desk more now. If you know your way around a PC, lear about IP, internet, etc. You can get jobs quite easy in areas like Nerds on the Run or other home PC/micro business support. The main thing with IT is not qualifications, but Experience. You learn 100x more on the job than in courses. Get a job in IT support, but not phone support. You will not earn a heap, but if you are good and you learn lots, you can then move into networking and this is where the big bucks start. I have a few guys under 25 on over $100k, but then they make me 3 times that to earn that money. What type of work exactly is it? Network service/support of business networks, we are also an ISP, hardware/software and remote administration. There are many areas to get into IT. I have found that Mechanics make good hardware, network or internet engineers. We have 2 trainees currently that are earning over $30k and do 1 night of TAFE.Hope this helps. Want(ed) to start up my own eco marine tourism business but then I got sucked into working for woolworths for $480 clear a week. 5 years later I finally left and now run my Uncle in laws pet / garden shop. On bit over 55K (only 38 easy going hours) plus a car, plus the occasional bonuses etc. Not bad work and job stability is pretty good. Would like more money but realistically I dont do work to warrant what I already get!!! Sometimes it feels my dreams are falling deeper into the distance lol. Mind you, the skills and knowledge I've taken away running a profitable (with major growth since November last year!!!) business with very little experience using someone elses money has been awesome. That shall help me one dayI can only offer the following wise thoughts1) Steer clear of Woolworths. I dont have one nice word to say about working their. Hated it 110% time but they make you feel like you need them. I have mates still working there taking home under $600. Cant feed a family with that2) if you dont like a job, change and experience many different types of work. I think people are better for it3) go to Uni. Doesnt matter what or where you study but damn, it's a LOT of fun. Uni taverns, girls, mates, parties. win win win! Finished when I was 20 and worked shutdowns etc. for a while, the money was insane (over 3k a week for 84hours) but decided it wasnt for me, So now I work as a Service technician for a Large Elevator company, its fuggin great, $34.10/hr plus call out allowance and I get a work car and phone for personal use. Its a bloody great job and I get to see a lot of stuff most people wouldnt, definately recommend it.
