Hi all,

I collected my FG XR6T. A few thoughts.

Very good urban economy. The car is yet to run in and it sits in the 11's & 12's (L / 100 km's). It did that with only 100 km's on the oddo and (I suspect) a 1/2 tank of 91 RON donated by the dealer. I topped it up wth 98 RON.

Nice grunt (the little bit I've sampled low in the rev range while running in).

Transmission lash noises. I plan to raise them at the 1st service. Hope they look after me. Is this always a diff issue or is it CV's?? Any thoughts?

Crook left foot rest for the driver. Is that the best Ford can offer?

Driver's seat could be a tad wider. You've seen President Skroob (Spaceballs) after he's beemed next door?

Nice big boot without hinges fouling on luggage. (unlike the VY)

Gutters on A pillars (hope they stop water off screen coming through driver's window)

I bet you get told the transmission clunk noise is normal. It won't be a diff or CV issue if it's the transmission. ( I'm assuming it's manual as you haven't stated.)

Crook left foot rest?? Ford haven't had a foot rest in the Falcon for quite some time. There is a pad moulded into the carpet, but I'd hardly call it a foot rest. And apparently, yes that's the best they can offer.

Good luck with the car and make sure you run it in hard.

oh and back on topic the gearbox clunk is normal and there is nothing you can do about it, your driving style will change to suit it and it will happen less

Hi Guys,

Yes it's a manual. Just gave it a tub - it's the best way to pick up paint defects. Glad to see Ford doesn't use cover straps where the C Pillar joins the body. The VY had them and I always worried that rust might start there. I'm not a fan of the two black rubber strips over the roof to hide a join, but everybody seems to use them these days.

The boot's better than the VY SV8. No enormous hinges to foul on things inside.

Thanks PHANTMXR6. It doesn't sound like a diff clunk. It sounds like slack's being taken up in the transmission. Whatever it is, I view it as a significant lack of refinement that takes some of the shine off this new car. I've noticed that smoothness when changing gears irons out much of the noise. I guess the guys that want higher levels of refinement buy a BMW? If Ford and Expensive Daewoo go FWD, maybe we'll all be driving 2nd hand BMW's . . . or WRX's??

Running in method? I am avoiding big boot-fulls and high revs. That's what the Owner's Manual says. I know idling and very light loads run the risk of glazed bores so I am sampling just a tad of acceleration.

A big issue for me is around town economy - that's where I do most of my driving. The car is returning 11 L / 100 kms with only 200 kms on the oddo and with a 1/2 tank of 91 RON. I will be very interested to see what sort of economy it returns after it's loosened up and has a full tank of 98 RON. Let's hope that 11 or 12 L / 100 km's is good enough economy into the future.

It'll be interesting to see what your economy figures end up being. It'll depend naturally on how much time you spend in stop/start traffic.

I'm out in the Bayside area of Brisbane, driving into the city each day for work. I don't sit in peak hour traffic but get a reasonable amount of stop/start action. I'm getting (using Shell V-Power) somewhere between 14-15 L/100km - worked out from the actual fuel fill v's the trip meter, just to sanitize the figures coming from the car computer. These figures I might add include the occasional "spurt" to keep the boy racers that are out there honest.

Let us know how you get on after a couple of tank fulls. Highway economy won't be an issue for you. We travelled down to Sydney at xmas (picked the car up on 4/12/08). Got between 9-10 L/100km - great figures for an "everyday driver" with enough mumbo to put a smile on ya face.

You will find it is backlash in the driveline and it will be "normal".

Ford will take the car for the day and then give it back with the ususal "they all do it, it's all normal".

This is why you should never buy a manual Falcon.

Remember that they are very powerful cars that needs a strong driveline. Unfortunatly Ford do not seem to believe in tight tollerences on their driveline and each little bit makes up for a big clunk. The drive by wire throttle also magnifies the action. You will learn to drive around the situation.

Yes. I hope that the Ford fuel economy gadget is accurate. I live in north-west Sydney. Stop-start traffic jams stuff economy but I've been able to get good figures with a little bit of travel on the arterials. I got caught in heavy traffic last night (Parramatta Rd became a parking lot so I ducked and weaved through the back streets) and the economy read-out dropped from mid 11's to mid 12's.

Driving the SV8 for economy and avoiding traffic jams, I could get mid 13's around town (if I used Shell V-Power). It looks like the XR6T will better that by about 2 L / 100 kms'. The big risk is that I will become hooked on the shove in the back. XR6T power is more accessible than the SV8 - it needed a rev to pick up its skirt. I doubt that the XR6T will match the SV8 for open road economy. It regularly returned low 8's on the Hume with the 3.46 diff. High 8's with the 3.73 diff. The diff change was an attempt to overcome LS1 doughiness and SV8 moon-rocket gearing. Theoretical top speed of 360 km/h.

If you want to boast about fuel economy, take your car for a run along the Hume. It's almost all divided road, so the car sits on cruise, even when you're overtaking 3 semis. Boring as bat dung, but at least you can get your jollies as you watch the car produce remarkable fuel economy figures.

I'll report back after I clock up some more km's and have verified economy with pencil and paper.
