Guest JCV8 Guests Posted 01/02/03 01:07 PM Share Posted 01/02/03 01:07 PM I didn't think the auto box had changed netween AU and BA. As far as I am aware, it's the same box, with different software plus the SS.Also, why do you guys all make such a big deal about the sequential shift? You have to push the lever sideways in the SS auto to go up and down gears. I have an AU auto, and I have always driven it like a manual, but I don't have to move the shifter sideways first to do it. I may take off in D, but if I want to carry reasonable revs through a corner or whatever, I bump it down to 3 or 2. In the BA you do this by shifting the lever sideways, then pressing the lever forward twice - I more step and different direction to what I do. And I have driven the BA auto with SS. It was good, but the SS to me is a gimmick.
Guest JCV8 Guests Posted 01/02/03 01:11 PM Share Posted 01/02/03 01:11 PM BTW, I am now ready and waiting for the forums equivalent of the rotten tomatoes, but I really am interested in why you all think it is so great!

I personally dont use it as much as i should but when i went to queensland last year I hired a MR2 Convertible with the sequential shift.. I really liked the feel of it especially changing gears and that driving around.. even though the car didnt go for sh*t. When they release dthe SSS i was thinking hopefully this is a better system or similar at least and decided to go for it. I guess im just neutral to the whole debate, but I just think it adds that bit extra "sportier" feel to the auto.. being able to especially drop down gears to get a bit more power to overtake etc. Also pretty handy to help you slow down in a hurry.. ie for speedcameras

Tomatoes - me, noo!! But you have obviously missed the point about the SSS in the BA!In most cases where I use SSS is when the car is being driven in performance mode anyway, thus no changing sideways, but only a slight flick up or dovn.I used to drive an AU V8 automatic and agree that it will almost do the same job. I say almost because the BA is far better as far as selecting the correct gear, due to the "Tiptronic" style of gear change, and the display of selected gear on the instrument cluster. The SSS is very useful for winding mountain roads, if you want to have a bit of fun.

It's no manual, of course there is no clutch! But once you are use to it, you'll notice this is very different to a normal Auto. What I hated in my AUXR8 Auto was if I wanted just a little more power from second gear, at the "wrong" revs it would try to kick back to first, and rev it's nuts off, and then slam into second! This does not happen with the SSS in second, and therefore is different to the normal Auto. It will not change back! Full Manual!I choose the SSS Auto because of the way you can select gears, not because of how it drove in drive! I was originally after a Manual but couldn't go past the SSS once I drove it around for a while... it's very smooth, and finishes the interior off very well. All my mate (who drive manuals) love the SSS, and say it's the end of the manual gear box for them... I tend to agree
Guest Phantom Guests Posted 03/02/03 02:03 AM Share Posted 03/02/03 02:03 AM Exactly right Mal.The SSS is a manual without a clutch.I have owned manuals and autos before and this is the best of both worlds. To the guys that say you will never use the SSS I say think again. Used it, thought about it, and still prefer the manual Honestly, I might consider it if it wasn't $950 extra. I would rarely have the car in drive so why pay the extra? So while racing an SS off the lights you are able to have one hand out the window giving him/her the one finger salute
Guest DZ. Guests Posted 03/02/03 03:43 AM Share Posted 03/02/03 03:43 AM Well, I'm not interested in street drags. Zipping through the mountain ranges is what I enjoy the most.

I didn't realise that it actually holds it in the selected gear - I knew it wouldn't go up a gear, but didn't know it wouldn't go down one. If I had the choice (which I would if was buying a BA), I would definitely go the auto with SSS - you get the best of both worlds, the advantages of an auto (towing ability etc) as well as the ability to change and HOLD gears!OK, so it's not a gimmick! Shoot me! Now how do I get my bum into a BA?
