I was flicking through some foxtel channels the other day and stumbled upon the sky news channel and "The week in New Zealand", whatever. Anyways, there was story about the "new speed camera's that they will be putting in new zealand. I nearly fell off my seat when some minister said, in a non remorsefull kind of way, that the cameras will be put out of view of road users and behind tree's etc and have no signage about it's location or whatever. I couldn't believe it. My heart goes out to the New Zealand XR drivers who frequent these forums. Poor drivers will get a fine in the mail and have no idea where they were pinged at all.

Oh well. When I got pinged (71km in a 60km zone in heaps of traffic, funnilly enough about 200-300 metres from an 80km zone I was leaving) a few years back by a speed camera VAN, I knew I was done when I saw the van and the signage. I swear that I drove like a grand ma for the next few days. If the Camera was "unknown" so to speak, I wouldn't have tread so lightly. Plus having speed Camera's with signage does remind you to behave.

As far as unmarked HWP cars being of use to catch serial offenders, I think they would be of little use.

I have fresh insight, as I now drive a white Australian made performance sedan, and I have noticed a change in the way select other road users treat me.

Some people come flying up behind me, just before they overtake, notice the possible copcar and jam on the brakes and pull in behind me.

Or the not keep left bozo's who drive 10k's under the limit, forcing others to 'undertake' them. But when I come up behind they shoot across to the left.

Now I know unmarked cars come in all colours but they still have a 'look' about them, stemming from the wider tyres combined with the slightly lower suspension thru to the hair cut of the driver.

And the serial offenders look for that, all you will catch are the ...

</enter_stereotype_mode> young girls in small $hity cars who speed, send SMS's, talk on the phone and tailgate without looking out the windows at the world around them.

And other inattentive types just like them, which is not such a bad thing.

Don't get me wrong I despise the stop sign/red light runners, never indicating not keep left, fast-slow-fast a$$holes as much as the next guy, but some are damn hard to catch.

There are definitely unmarked XR6 Turbos out there...saw a grey one pull somoene over the other day in Malvern (Vic).

Also saw a marked one with all the flouro markings of a "look at me" highway patrol car at Sandown last weekend which was an XR6T with premium braking.

I noted they had a radar gun permanently plumbed in the car, mounted where you would expect the passenders right knee to be.

Also the unlimted speed thing is no big deal. Means instead of hitting the limit at 230, it goes to 260. Irrelevant really because you wont find a cop that will take it that fast in a persuit anyway, unless you were escaping with a nuclear bomb or something.

Sorry, and as for people 'thinking twice' before they do anything stupid if there were more unmarked cars please, gimme a bit of credit for 14 years on the job, I think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to traffic law enforcement

I'll give you credit, no problem, but first try to enunciate your point, if you have one, clearly, so us mere mortals can understand what you are trying to say.

I can't make any sense at all from this last post of yours ...

I think you need to read all his posts...

My interpretation is that VG reckons all HWP cars should be unmarked, as this would make everyone behave all the time - you would never know whether the car following you is a police vehicle.

The opposing argument is that this would make bugger all difference - people would behave like idiots regardless of whether HWP cars are marked or not. 14 years of experience leads VG to believe that this argument is crap.

That sum it up velvet glove??

Yep. Ta

"I know many professional drivers, including a couple of HWP guys who, like myself, regularly exceed the posted limit of 100 or 110 by up to 30 kph."

I'm sorry my friend. PROFESSIONAL drivers dont exceed the speed limit by 30km/h. The only time I would do anywhere near that in a job car is when the priority of a job dictated it. I'm not entirely against your posts though, and your comments regarding politicians absolute ignorance of what happens, as Morpheus says, in the 'real world' are spot on. Take a polly on a walkround with Beat Police on a busy Saturday night and you will lose count of how many times they will say 'I didnt realise it was like this'

I will say, however, that I am not entirely speed focussed, like Plonky. To be honest my pet hate is mobile phone usage whilst driving, but my all time fave is dealing with road ragers, particularly those 'moits' who feel the need to terrorise older ladies. Making them beg for forgiveness often isnt enough

Velvet Glove> So it is clearly your view that the HWP drivers to which I referred and who I personally know are not PROFESSIONAL drivers. That's nice to know and very reassuring to us that there are drivers in the HWP who are not PROFESSIONAL drivers.

Clearly then you would be able to honestly and uncategorically attest that YOU have never driven at a speed of 130kph in a 100kph zone at any time other than in the line of duty ... would you? Think carefully about who on these forums may happen to know who you are before answering ...
