hey guys I just recently purchased an alpine type X 12'' sub,,and it says in its specs that it runs at 4 ohms.

from what I know I believe the more ohms the more resistance? so 2 ohms will allow more rms power running from the amp.

is it possible to run it at 2 ohms,, or will this destroy something or not work at all?? whats the deal with the ohms.

as this sub is 1000 rms,,and its range is 500-1000 so if I have to run it at 4 ohms it will be a little difficult to find an amp, for a reasonable price to run it at a high rms.

thanks for the help.

The sub will only ever be 4ohm.

You use two 4 ohm subs wired in series to make a 2 ohm load for the amp... an amp of say 100watts rms, at 4ohm, can usually deliver 200watts when run in 2ohm ( in theory)

just as I made this topic a friend rang me,,and I spoke to him as he has the exact same sub,and he said his running his at 2 ohms, and when he bought it the person at the store said it can be run at 2, 4 or 8???

this sub is a 4ohm dual voice coil

heres the specs if it helps:

dual 4 ohm woofer can be either 2 or 8 ohm.

you need a good mono block that makes AT LEAST 1000 watts RMS at 2ohm.

I wouldnt think you would be looking for a moderate amplifier if you spent so much on a single woofer.

Would have been better off getting Type R woofer and Amplifier for not much more than the Type X on its own.

I had a young girl bought a Type X 12 and ran it off a WOW brand "Option Audio/Sound Magnus" amp. It ended in tears and her being $800 down. Buy an $800 woofer, be prepared to spend double on an amp!!

aaahhh mmmm aaahhhhh - hold on a sec....

rapid and trick...guys its a DVC sub... so not only does it change when wiring more then 1 'sub driver' to another, in series or parallel, but also the way the 2 VC (Dual VC's) are wired...

So if wiring 2x DVC subs in series and the VC's of each sub in parallel will be a different load to - 2x DVC suns in parallel with the VC's of each in series... Make sense? :spit:

In this case -

Single (x1) DVC (x2VC) Sub-

DVC 4 ohm (each VC) in Series - 1 ch (mono) = 8 ohm load on the mono block amp (equil. load each VC - 1 ohm)

DVC 4 ohm (each VC) in Parallel - 1ch (mono) =2 ohm load on the mono block amp (equi. load each VC - 4 ohm)

boost - please take it to your local audio shop and ask them to do it for you!

If you get it wrong - you may have a big paper weight!

And just cos you wire it one way over another - 4 ohm/8ohm/2ohm doesnt mean that the 100w v 200w will 'sound twice as loud!

(COS IT WONT) db and sensitivity is what you look at for sound volume levels!

(read the pinned post about 'just music or more' its all explained in there)...

Yep. Go see a professional. :spoton:

Smicky explained it as simple as it gets.

If you don't understand it don't attempt to mess around with it.

You'll end up doing damage to something.
