I have noticed in the last few weeks the ZF 6 speed in my G6ET makes a big 'thud' when going into reverse. It doesn't happen when the cars cold, more once it warmed up. If the car is parked on an angled driveway the 'thud' is a lot worse.

I have found that if I pump the brake a few times before going into reverse I can stop the thud from occurring most times. Seems like when normally pushing the brake before going into reverse the brakes aint grabbing enough so torque converter load is still on the transmission.

Anyone else have this problem?

Do you use your handbrake? Generally it has alot to do with how much load was on the transmission when put into Park. The best way to do it is to stop the vehicle, engage the park brake, let the foot brake off and then select park. This should make sure that there is no load on the box

Yes handbrake goes up after I put it into P, and then out of P into R first then the handbrake off when taking off.

I have done the above on my other auto cars without any issues

I have had xr6 bf2 which did the same as I have an angled driveway .It is only load on the box nothing else . got fg xr6t now and I make sure that it is braked before going into park and no prob..

So when stopping, as senna said I should be going handbrake. foot off brake to load the handbrake and then go into P?

This seems backward for such an advanced transmission when other autoboxes dont need this.

It's more to do with the suspension, if you're parking on perfectly level ground it shouldn’t matter but if on a slope you'll feel the arse-end of the car drop down once you take your foot off the brake. That's what is loading up the locking peg (or whatever it's called) on the transmission.

Hardly noticeable in the utes though thanks to the agricultural leaf-sprung suspension!

Nah mate - working as designed.

You're right though how it's stupid the sequence you need to go through to prevent the noise. Appears like you are losing the plot to an unsuspecting passenger :spit:

I am sure people like Maserati and Jag who use the same tranny have worked out a way around this problem. Hate to think you would get that noise after paying 200+k for a car.
