Turbo Lag

Can someone tell me what turbo lag is? Does it mean the car build up the boost slow? My BA T cannot reach its full boost of 9psi (by looking at the boost gauge) in 1st and 2nd gear (manual) no matter how high I rev it up (I have to rev quite hard for the boost gauge to go pass the 0 on these 2 gears) but it does quite easily on 3rd and 4th gear. Is it normal on the XR6T? I sat on a Skyline on the other day, looking at his boost gauge and found that the Skyline reach full boost very easy on all gears. My friend told me that because my car got more turbo lag than his car is it correct?

Does the BOV reduce the turbo lag? If not what can I do to reduce the turbo lag?

Blue_XR6,

To explain it simply lag is the time at takes from when you put your foot down to when you feel accelleration and the turbo starts making boost. The bigger the turbo the more lag and the longer it takes to get to full boost. Think of a big turbo like a fat person trying to run. Takes some time for him to get going but watchout when he's up to speed.

Doesn't sound right that your car isn't making full boost in the first two gears. The BOV will make stuff all difference to turbo lag I believe. Some ways to reduce lag is to shorten the intake piping from the turbo to the throttle or install or modify to a smaller turbo (not suggested).

Best thing would be to compare your car against another XR to see if there might be a problem.

I would not instal an aftermarket guage and then kill the car trying to get it to read the way you want. Sounds like you are saying its not reading full boost before you redline in 1st and 2nd? I dont think your using a practicible method.

Mate, your best bet woudl be to see your tuner and see what is wrong, from what you have described the car isn't making boost when it should be.

How does it feel power wise compared to stock?

After the tune, with 9psi and 262 RWKW, my car is much faster and very responsive compared to when it's stock. I beat my friend's S15 with 11psi 167 RWKW which was surprised him. I do feel a lot of torque on the first two gear, just the boost needle doesn't go up, that's all. Maybe the gauge is not accurate. I got the Auto Gauge which is the same with a lot of people here. But if it's the gauge faulty, how come it read very accurate on 3rd and 4th gear (abit more than 0.6 bar which is 9 psi I believe).

I heard that boost doesnt have time to get up there in 1st and 2nd because it hits redline too quickly. isnt that why they read peak dyno figures in 3rd gear?

it should still make boost on WOT in first and second, maybe not full boost in first, but it definately should in second...

just crank it up to 18 psi, then you will know what lag is. tha difference between when you stand on it to when your tyres start smoking and squealing for mercy.
