It does get slow from time to time but no big deal. Free or not, it can be as annoying as those free traffic lights that take a milkenium to change. Or those (not so free) check-out gals and guys in the express lane going the speed of Holden.

Is this website in a shared hosting environment using a shared MySql server (it is on Apache)? Possibly a virtual server on shared hardware? It's also hosted in the US so their peak times affect us at "odd" times. IP.Board database design reaching it's design limit?

Constant database upgrades can also leave behind some ugly stuff dependning on how much effort the software owners put into their upgrade process. How much do they care about leaving a clean database after an upgrade? I've seen some fairly ugly instances of this over the years.

Just do what Telstra did when I worked on telstra.com redevelopment a few years ago. Chuck 4 quad core 64 bit Sun Sparcs at the job. That way, not matter how crappy the code and software is, it will probably never run out of puff.

Of course, bandwidth throttling could be an issue?

A lot of it has to do with IP board I help run GMH-Torana and we are running the same configuration with a lot less members than what we have here, the size of the database over there is now starting to affect the performance as well.
